GERALD VERNE SCOTT

    Gerald Verne Scott, son of Raymond Verne and Edna Maude (Bissell) Scott, was born March 26, 1921 in rural Villisca, Iowa. He graduated from Corning high school in 1938. He farmed with his dad until he was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1942. On August 1, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lois Brown in Grant City, Missouri. While in the army, he was an officer in the artillery as a forward observer. After the surrender of enemy forces in August 1945, Gerald was assigned to the Army of the Occupation in Japan. Gerald was honorably discharged as a captain in the spring of 1946.
    Gerald returned to the Corning area and resumed farming with his dad until moving to a farm eight miles northwest of Diagonal in Lincoln Township where he farmed and raised his family. In 1980 he moved into Clearfield and continued farming for John Parrish until retiring in 1998. He enjoyed raising a garden and doing yard work. Gerald was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be remembered for his gentle manner. Gerald was a 60-year member of Morris Herrold Post #395 in Diagonal.
    Gerald passed away April 8, 2014 at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Diana Scott on July 8, 2008; brothers, Claire Scott and Glenn Scott; sisters, Norma O’Riley, Deloris Hollander and Ruth Swartz; sisters-in-law, Lois Kemery Scott, Betty Scott and Berneita Dunham, and brothers-in-law, John O’Riley, Sam Hollander, Byron Swartz, Byron Ogburn, Morris Dunham, Floyd Morris, Gerald Brown and Bernard Brown.
    Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Lois Scott, of Clearfield, Iowa; son, David (Jeannette) Scott of Osceola, Iowa; daughters, Janis (Ed) Johnston of Diagonal, Iowa and Joyce (Dave) Sweeney of Lenox, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Derek Scott, Scott Johnston, Deron (Liline) Scott, Curt (Mandy) Johnston, Trent Johnston, Angela (Ryan) Reynolds, Erin (Tysen) Christensen and Chris (Anna) Sweeney; great-grandchildren, Adalyn Reynolds, Ryce Reynolds, Makenna Johnston, Hadlee Christensen, Emma Reynolds, Chase Johnston, Jesa Christensen and Cole Johnston; brothers, Marvin Dee Scott of Covington, Washington and Edward (Sharon) Scott of Corning, Iowa; sister, Illah (Clifford) Brown of Corning, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Joann Morris of Omaha, Nebraska, Judy Brown of McKinney, Texas, Darlene Brown of Papillion, Nebraska, Judy (Dennis) Grantham of Denver, Colorado and Rosanna Walker of Moorehead, Minnesota, and other relatives and friends.
    A memorial fund has been established in his name to be decided later. Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Clearfield was in charge of the arrangements.
    Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield on Friday, April 11, 2014, with Rev. Shurmaine McAlpine officiating. Musical selections included “In The Garden,” “God Bless the USA,” “Amazing Grace” and “In Color.”
    Casket bearers were Derek Scott, Scott Johnston, Deron Scott, Curt Johnston, Trent Johnston, Angela Reynolds, Erin Christensen and Chris Sweeney.
    Honorary pallbearers included Adalyn Reynolds, Ryce Reynolds, Makenna Johnston, Hadlee Christensen, Emma Reynolds, Chase Johnston, Jesa Christensen and Cole Johnston.
    Military rites were by Morris Herrold Post #395.
    Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery in Clearfield.
