MAXINE ELOISE HENDERSON WERNER

Maxine Eloise Henderson Werner, the daughter of Ruth Henderson Culver and Carl Henderson was born March 27, 1921 in rural Kent, Iowa. She passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Mt. Ayr Health Care at the age of 93.
Maxine graduated from Creston High School in 1939 and received her teaching certificate in 1940 from Creston Community College and her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979 from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.
She was united in marriage on May 26, 1940 to Darrel Werner of Shannon City, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Nancy, Steve and Jeffrey. Darrel and Maxine farmed south of Creston the first year of their marriage. The remaining years were spent within a two mile radius of the family home in rural Shannon City.
Maxine, a town girl, was thrust into county life and learned quickly the duties of a farmwife. She worked beside Darrel for 60 years raising cattle, hogs, sheep, turkeys, chickens, gardening and cooking for hired hands. Maxine taught for 30 years in the East Union school district starting as a fifth grade teacher and ending as a special education reading instructor. She loved her students and always spoke fondly of her coworkers. Those teaching years were special and Maxine always said that her teaching was like a vacation!
She was a member of BF P.E.O. and a lifetime member of the Retired Teachers Association. Maxine enjoyed reading, dancing and the neighborhood clubs. Family always took priority and Maxine loved being a grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Jeffrey, granddaughter Jan Kelly, brother Bill Henderson and brothers in law Dick Garland and Elton Werner.
Maxine is survived by daughter Nancy Kelly and husband Mike; son steve and wife Marilyn; four grandchildren, Julie Ingram, Melissa Stenberg, Amanda Getschman and Brandon Werner; ten great grandchildren, five great, great grandchildren; four sisters in law, Marjorie Werner, Doris Garland, Carol Bryan husband Dean and Viola Henderson and other relatives and friends.
Services will be Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home with Reverend Lila Greene officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Shannon City.
Casket bearers will be Mathew Ingram, Race Kelly, Drew Ingram, David Stenberg, Jonathan Ingram, Nick Getschman, Jordan Ingram and Brandon Werner.
Memorials may be sent to the Tingley Meal Site in Maxine’s name.
