On January 22, the Boards of Education from Bedford and Mount Ayr met jointly to interview six semi-finalist candidates for the shared district superintendent position. Previously, both boards met with representatives from Grundmeyer Leader Services to review application materials for all 16 applicants and screen to the six semi-finalists. Each semi-finalist candidate spent 25 minutes with the boards answering nine questions. Three candidates were selected by the two boards as finalists.
Jason Shaffer
Jason currently serves as high school principal in Shenandoah, IA. His prior experience includes serving as a middle school principal in Shenandoah and Blair, NE. He was named Iowa Association of Student Councils Middle School Principal of the Year in 2018. Jason has also served as a technology director, curriculum director, activities director, special education coordinator and teacher/coach during his career. In his current position, he has led initiatives to expand STEM and career and technical programs at Shenandoah.
Michael Irvin
Michael currently serves as the 6-12 principal for Bedford Schools., serving in that position for the last five years. His prior experience includes serving as an assistant principal, activities director, math teacher and coach. Some highlights to Michael’s leadership efforts include leading facility improvements, improving student achievement, leading technology initiatives and delivering professional development. He is also actively involved in the community and helped create the Bedford Community School District Hall of Fame.
Joe Erickson
Joe currently serves as Superintendent for North Iowa Community School District in Buffalo Center, IA; he is in his third year leading the district. His prior experience includes serving as an elementary principal, elementary teacher, and Senior Loan Officer for Wells Fargo for 2 years. Under Joe’s leadership the district has improved facilities, expanded day care options for parents, implemented flexible learning days for teachers, and enhanced shared leadership opportunities.
On Thursday, February 6, each finalist will interview in both the Bedford and Mount Ayr School Districts. The formal interview day will include a tour of both communities, district facilities, formal interviews with district and community stakeholders from Bedford and Mt. Ayr, and formal interview with the school boards.
