It was another successful outing for the Mount Ayr Raiderette volleyball squad Thursday night as they hosted the Essex Trojans.
In a best-of-five game, the Raiderettes came out on top, winning three sets in a row to take a 3-0 victory and improve to 3-0 on the season.
The first set, Mount Ayr had a nice cushion, but the Trojans began to capitalize on errors and took a 13-12 lead, halfway through the set. The lead change prompted a Mount Ayr timeout.
“Stop looking down. We are going to make mistakes and that’s volleyball, but we can’t dwell on it,” said co-head coach Brandie Ruggles on the message during the timeout. “We noticed heads were going down, a lot of self-doubt and you have to shake it off. We were still in the game, but we didn’t have that belief that we were still in the game.”
The Raiderettes bounced right back after the short break and saw precision kills at the boundary lines and nice plays at the net.
“They just put it all together,” said co-head coach Kristen Graham. “They are taking bits and pieces from practice and implementing it into the game and that’sthat’s what we’ve really been working on lately in practice. Our passes are there, our setters are recognizing different opportunities for our hitters and we are capitalizing on it when we need to.”
The Raiderettes as a team, one game off of their win total from last year, are excited about the future of the team.
“It’s very exciting and it shows that the girls have an agenda,” said coach Brandie Ruggles. “They want to compete, they want to win and it makes it fun for them.”
The Raiderettes won 25-17, 25-18 and 25-14 against the Trojans.
Leading the kill category throughout the night was Addy Reynolds and Payten Lambert with nine and eight kills, respectively, while Tegan Streit also collected five.
Kaylie Shields and Hayden Ruggles each had 12 assists on the night to help Mount Ayr achieve a victory.
Defensively, the Raiderettes collected four blocks with Reynolds, Streit, Zoey Larsen and Halsie Barnes each credited with one block, while Reynolds led the team in digs with 10 and Streit recorded seven.
At the serve line, Maddie Stewart was perfect on the night going 19-for-19 with one ace, while Kaylie Shields led the team in aces with three after going 11-for-13 at the line.
Teammate Hayden Ruggles also had three aces on the night and was eight-for-11 at the line.
