Jill Kniep attempts a freethrow against Clarke Monday night. Kniep led the Raiderette scorers with 22 with seven buckets made from the field and eight-of-10 free throws.
Lamoni 44, Mt. Ayr 37
Mount Ayr’s first outing of the season wasn’t a pretty one as they travelled to Lamoni to face the Demons.
The Raiderettes shot 16 percent from the field, but only lost by seven, in a game that saw a combined 52 fouls, 24 towards the Raiderettes and 28 towards the Demons.
“I am not sure we could have shot any worse at the line or overall from the field,” said coach Thad Streit. “We got some good looks in the lane, but just couldn’t get them to fall. Lamoni did a nice job defensively, but to shoot 16 percent from the field and lose by seven, I feel like we had our chances to win this game.”
The Raiderettes trailed at halftime 20-15 and outscored the Demons 10-8 in the third but fell back in the fourth, ultimately falling 44-37.
Maddie Stewart led the Raiderettes with 23 points, hitting six-of-25 buckets, along with two three’s and nine-of-18 from the line.
Tegan Streit led the team in rebounds with 10, while Stewart added eight along with Payten Lambert.

Mt. Ayr 52, Clarke 47
The Raiderette basketball team travelled to Osceola Monday night for a basketball contest against the Clarke Indians.
It was a barn burner of a game that saw the Raiderettes come out on top, 52-47 to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Mount Ayr led the Indians 13-10 after the first quarter but went into halftime down 24-19 after Clarke found the hoop for 14 points, while the Raiderettes only scored six.
The Raiderettes started the second-half with a big statement by Maddie Stewart with a three-point shot followed up by a layup that saw her roll an ankle on the landing which would go on to sideline her for the remainder of the game.
Senior Jill Kniep stepped-up big for Mount Ayr after Stewart’s injury, leading the team with 22 points to lead the Raiderettes to victory after putting the Raiderettes ahead late in the third.
“Jill did a great job tonight and when she started getting going and the way she was getting buckets and free-throws we were trying to isolate her and get her the ball,” said coach Thad Streit. “She had a lot of games like this in JV in previous years, I knew she could do it.”
Kniep has put in a lot of work to get where she is this season, including waking up at 6 a.m. in the summer to shoot hoops with her dad, Clint Kniep.
“I played travel ball out of Panora starting in March and then my dad and I would go in and shoot hoops at 6 a.m. Every summer day and I would jog and run and lift,” said Kniep. “It feels great [to get the win]. It was definitely a team effort.”
