The coveted “Rock” trophy that both the Raiders and Wovlerines play for sits eagerly awaiting for the winner to hoist it high. Mount Ayr will be playing to return the Rock back to Mount Ayr this season.
The Raiders have held on to ‘The Rock’ since its inception, that is until last year, when the Nodaway Valley Wolverines snatched the trophy honoring longtime coaches for Mount Ayr and Greenfield/Nodaway Valley Dave Still and Bob Daut.
The Wolverines stunned the Raiders last season with a 20-16 loss.
The Raiders hold a 13-2 All-Time record over the Wolverines going back to 2006, with the Wolverines securing wins last season and then back in 2010, by a score of 38-35.
Last season, the Raiders fought their way to a District 7 title, while finishing the year with a record of 7-3 before falling to Logan-Magnolia in the second round of playoffs.
The Wolverines finished the season 4-5, fourth in their district.
The Raiders return 10 seniors that look to bring ‘The Rock’ back to Mount Ayr where an empty spot sits in the trophy cabinent, while the Wolverines will try to keep a grip on the trophy for another year.
The Raiders bring seniors: Drew Ehlen, Trey Fooken, Evan Weehler, Riley Stark, Braydon Pierson, Jaixen Frost, Kade Dugan, Jaydon Knight, Audan Albaugh, Ethan Main and Klayton Yoder back into leadership roles this year.
Returning to the team this year as sophomores and juniors are Trevin Victor, Tyler Martin, Garrett Walter, Dylan Swank, Dylan Graham, Preston Fleharty, Jaize Frost, Tucker Larson, Birk Willis, Kaiden White, Allen Jennings, Keye Willis, Matt Larson, Zane Cornwell, Ethan Johns, Colton Dredge, Dalton Barnes, Ayden Miller, Kash Wasteney, Chris Wyant, Tucker Knox, Aidan Murphy, Adan Trujillo, Louden Main, Brock Shaha and Joe Mate.
New to the team are freshmen Evan Weehler, Jaxson Greene, Conlee Stark, Jackson Ruggles, Tyler Still, Tate Dugan, Tate Schaefer, Tanner Streit, Rowan Sackett, Bracken Collier, Matthew Mate, Zech Ranker, Zavier Bautista and Nathan Mederos.
Kick-off is this Friday, August 26 at 7 p.m. in Mount Ayr.
