AHSTW 41,
Mount Ayr 13
The Raiders suffered their first loss of the season to the AHSTW Vikings last Friday night.
On the opening drive, the Raiders punted which gave the Vikings the opportunity to go ahead early.
The Vikings led by 14 before the Raiders scored their first points of the contest, coming on a Braydon Pierson two-yard rush, with Jaixen Frost kicking the extra point, making it a one possession game.
The Raiders amassed 286-yards, with Frost throwing for 172-yards, completing 17-of-23 passes with one interception.
Frost found Drew Ehlen four times for 49 yards, while Preston Fleharty also caught four passes for 42 yards.
Frost passed to seven different receivers throughout the night.
On the ground, the Raiders rushed 33 times for 114-yards.
Leading the ground game was Pierson who ran the ball 14 times for 43 yards.
The Raiders wouldn’t score again until the fourth quarter with 4:40 left in the contest, with Pierson taking the ball in from one-yard out.
The Raiders struggled to make any big gains, however, losing 124.5 yards to 15 penalties.
“You got to give credit to Avoca, they are a good football team,” said senior Jaydon Knight. “In the huddle we tried to stay positive, and flags were cutting us back.”
The Raiders punted the ball four times to the Vikings one and the Raiders coughed up two fumbled with one interception.
Mount Ayr defense allowed 481 total yards with 316-yards on the ground and 165-yards through the air.
AHSTW was flagged on six plays for 65 yards.
“Tough games you have to make good plays,” said Knight. “I’m out here playing for my team, doing the best I can.”
With Homecoming this Friday, Knight will be a leader in helping the younger teammates stay focused on the task at hand.
“You leave it at the gate and come to practice,” said Knight. “We have to come ready to play Friday night against Sidney.”
Coach Ryan Victor was reflective on the night, but still believed the Raiders have it in them to continue to win.
“They had a good plan and we are a run football team and when you force us to throw that kind of gets us out of our thing,” said coach Victor. “Penalties really put us behind. There’s no playcall for second and 20 or third and 45. You have to give all the credit to Avoca, they came ready to play.”
Despite the loss, coach Victor talked to the team about bouncing back.
“The biggest thing is how we respond to this,” said Victor. “We were in the same situation against Riverside last year and they made the decision to come back and get to work and that’s what we’ve got to decide. We are still a good football team, this isn’t an indication of our team.”
The one positive coach Victor came away with in the game was that they are not unbeatable.
“Sometimes I think when you get undefeated and you do some of those things you feel untouchable,” said coach Victor. “You’re very touchable and I thought our guys responded well. We just weren’t up to where we felt we should be.”
