Mount Ayr 43, St.
Albert 3
The Raiders defeated the St. Albert Falcons last Friday night in Council Bluffs as they improved to 5-1 on the season.
Mount Ayr recorded 266 yards of total offense.
Rushing for 140 yards, the Raiders ran the ball 31 times and saw three different rushers in the endzone, led by Braydon Pierson who ran for 46 yards on 11 carries.
Through the air, the Raiders completed six-of-eight passes for 126 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Jaixen Frost was five-of-seven from under center, throwing for 101 yards and one touchdown, along with one interception.
Jaydon Knight took a direct snap during the contest and was able to find Pierson in the back of the endzone on a 25 yard touchdown pass.
“I love that formation because they don’t know if I’m going to run or pull up and pass,” said Knight. “I saw pressure coming so I just knew I could get it out there to Braydon.”
Pierson led the receivers with three catches for 68 yards.
Knight was a workhorse for Mount Ayr, carrying the ball twice for 20 yards, catching the ball twice for 34 yards, including a touchdown, blocking a punt that was returned for a touchdown, while also collecting 11 tackles, including three for a loss.
“My goal was to fly around and make plays so we could get this win,” said Knight. “It’s big for everyone, big for the program.”
Knight also found himself in the field goal formation at kicker in which he kicked three-for-three on point-after-touchdown kicks.
“I practice kicking every day in practice and I don’t do the traditional kick, I toe punch,” said Knight. “I just try to get it through there.”
The Raiders had only ever scored seven points total in Council Bluffs, and Mount Ayr’s head coach, Ryan Victor, had struggled there in his time as Missouri Valley’s coach as well.
The Falcons came away with only three points on the night after Frost’s interception was returned to the three yard line.
The Raider defense pushed the Falcons back to the five and St. Albert settled for a field goal.
Coach Victor spoke on the knowledge and skill of defensive coordinator, Lucas Smith.
“I really feel like he does a great job of putting together a game plan and our guys buy into it,” said coach Victor. “It boils down to lining up right and running to the ball. It’s tough to hold them within the five to a field goal and that just speaks to the resiliency and toughness of our kids.”
The Raiders allowed only three points, while allowing the Falcons offense to record 171 total yards with 88 on the ground and 83 through the air.
The Mount Ayr defense collected three fumbles, blocked a punt and returned the blocked punt for a touchdown.
