One Hundred Years Ago

Interest in the new hotel project is again being revived with the return of better times and a more hopeful feeling among those who are ably to assist the project in a financial way.
Mr. Keffer, of the firm of Keffer & Jones, architects, of Des Moines, was in Mount Ayr last Thursday inspecting the work being done at the county farm, for which his firm furnished the plans. The same firm has also been engaged to furnish the plans for the new court house in case the voters decide to build one at the November election.
U.S.G. Lynch was down from Mount Ayr a day or two last week in the interest of the Kellerton Oil Company, which was purchased from Mary Enix, the old livery barn, one block west of Main Street and will put up a filling station as soon as the barn is torn down and taken away. Work clearing the ground is already well along.
Jarnagin’s Weekly: The judge of the district court at Algona proposes to make life a burden to persistent violators of the prohibitory law.
Reiney Brant was convicted three times for the illegal manufacture and sale of intoxicants and the last conviction brought him a sentence of 1 year in the penitentiary at hard labor. he narrowly escaped deportation to Germany his native country.

Years Ago

The grand opening of the new Cross Service Station on Hwy 2 & 169, in Mount Ayr will be held Friday, October 24.
While celebrating the opening of the new station, Ames Cross, proprietor, will observe the 11th anniversary of business activity in Mount Ayr.
Horseback riding enthusiasts and admirers of fine saddle horses will meet Saturday night, October 25 in the assembly room of the court house in Mount Ayr to organize what will be known as the Ringgold County Riding Club.
For being the 1st woman pilot to land at Carroll Air Meet Sunday morning, Jo Farmer, of this city, was presented a silver plate inscribed with the words “Carroll, Ia. Air Meet 1947.”
She was the only woman in attendance to be awarded a prize. Mrs. Farmer was also honored with an invitation to become a member of the 99er’s national women’s pilot organization. This organization, with headquarters in Omaha, NE has as its first president, Amelia Earhart.

Births: October 14, a daughter, Twila, to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Taylor.

Fifty Years Ago

Tim Irving to be honored by Lions Club. Another Mount Ayr athlete will be honored Saturday October 28, as part of a continuing project of Mount Ayr Lions Club.
Tim Irving is a former Mount Ayr Community football, track and baseball standout and current varsity halfback for the Simpson College Redman at Indianola. Irving is the fifth Mount Ayr athlete to be honored, each at a different school.
Friends of Margaret Pence will honor her at an open house on October 30, at the clubrooms at Mount Ayr Public Library. Mrs. Pence will move next week to Des Moines where beginning November 1, she will be employed six nights a week at the piano bar in the Savery Hotel.
Births: October 20, a son, to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Willis.

Regan Main and B.J. Poppe reigned as the homecoming royalty for Mount Ayr Community school’s annual homecoming activities over the weekend.
Shirley Hightshoe of Mount Ayr recently returned from attending the wedding of her niece, television, and movie actress Hillary Swank. Swank was married September 28, to actor Chad Lowe.
Four Mount Ayr Community high school softball players have been named to all southwest Iowa honors by the Omaha World Herald. Melissa Eighmy was named to first team as short stop; Debbie Stephens was named second team outfielder; honorable mention went to catcher Brandie Shields and designated hitter Kristen McKern.
Merrill Perry, better known to many in this area as “The Old Band Man” continues to find value in musical instruments by conducting a lamp making business. Perry and his son, David of Anita began experimenting with instrument lamp making and started their company, The Lampworks, in the fall 1996.

Mount Ayr post office has welcomed a new post master. Mike Owsley, 46, officially filled the position on Saturday October 6, but his first day on the job was the following Monday.
Daniel Maak, son of Kevin and Marcy (Miller) Maak of Midland, MI has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scouting’s highest honor. Daniel is the grandson of Marshia Miller and Dr. Keith Miller, both of Mount Ayr.
The undefeated Raider football team captured the District 7 championship and head to the first round of play-offs this week.
Mount Ayr cross country runner has qualified to compete in the state cross country meet. Adrian Richards finished 8th in a time of 16:37 to earn her trip to the state meet this Saturday at Fort Dodge.
