Brock Shaha was the lone Raider at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament that took place at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines February 15-18.
As a state qualifier just a year ago, Shaha had brought back experience from the big stage and had his sights set on the top of the podium.
Things were looking good for the 106 pound sophomore from Mount Ayr as Wednesday morning saw Shaha with a win over Codder Malcom of Wapello, defeating him by fall in 2:46.
Thursday was a different day and Shaha opened the morning with a 9-0 loss to Mason Shirk of Wilton, who ended up second overall.
The loss put Shaha in contention for third place.
His second match of the day was against Atlee Dewitt of Alburnett.
The match went the distance and then some as Shaha came out on top in a sudden victory with a score of 7-5.
Friday, Shaha would face Riverside,Oakland’s Davis Bramman.
Another tough match, Shaha found the will to persevere and won another sudden victory, this time by a score of 2-0.
Cooper Hinz, of Jesup, was the next opponent for Shaha, a match that took place Saturday morning.
Shaha was defeated by a 5-0 decision, putting third place out of reach, but still looking at a podium spot.
It was Shaha versus Wesley Sadler of Lisbon.
Shaha won by a 3-0 decision to stand on the podium in fifth place to finish out the 2022-23 wrestling campaign.
