Thirty Years Ago

Seth Imus has bought out B.F. Day’s interest in the grocery firm formerly known as Day & Riggs. The firm name is now Riggs & Imus.
The most terrific and destructive cyclone that ever visited this section swept over northwest Missouri and a small portion of southwest Iowa on Tuesday last week, causing wide spread disaster and leaving everything in its path in a state of wreck and ruin.
The destruction and damage done to property by the disturbing elements together with the numerous fatalities reported is simply appalling.
A well informed citizen reports a healthy movement in the region of Arispe, in Union county, and some other points on the Diagonal or the Chicago Great Western railroad to extend a branch to Mount Ayr. The talk is well meaning and the plans are feasible.

Interest of greater community service and development the Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department and Ringgold Post #172 American Legion, are jointly sponsoring a drive for the purchase of a farm fire truck to serve four townships in Ringgold county.
Only two bids were submitted Friday and both were rejected by the town council for the proposed extensive street improvement program in Mount Ayr.
It is assumed that the reason for lack of interest in bidding may be attributed to the fact that the contract on the Mount Ayr project would have required completion by September 1, 1948.

Tornado winds struck Ringgold county Thursday April 19, causing extensive damage to several farmsteads in the Ellston area.
Among the hardest hit was that of Mr. and Mrs. Clairborne Padgitt, located several miles southwest of Beaconsfield.
Mrs. Allen Richards of Kellerton has been appointed the judicial magistrate for Ringgold county, the duties which she will assume July 1, 1973, under the court reform law passed by the 1971 state legislature.
News of Men in the Armed Services: Douglas Lee Strange, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Strange of Mount Ayr, enlisted in the U.S. Navy 180 day program on April 19 at Des Moines, IA.
Births: April 19, a son, to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Parmenter.

The second annual Outstanding Agriculture Awards were presented by the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce at the group’s ag awards banquet Tuesday. Lee Faris was named the county’s outstanding farmer of the year.
Two Mount Ayr Community high school musicians were honored as outstanding soloists at the state jazz band championships in Des Moines Thursday. Joel Jennings on guitar and Scott Lauritsen on tenor saxophone.

Two winners for the 2013 Arion Awards were announced at Monday’s Merrill Perry Band Concert, Jennifer Blair and April Shields.
Braydee Poore finished in second place in the boys high jump competition at the 2013 Kansas Relays in Lawrence, KS. Poore jumped 6’6” to claim the runner up spot in the 86th running of the Kansas Relays.
Ringgold County Public Health is proud to announce the fruits of a successful partnership with the City of Mount Ayr.
New “way finding” signs were placed on a walking and biking route from the Mount Ayr elementary school to Judge Lewis Park. They have motivational messages along with distances to the next destination at various spots along the route.
