One Hundred Years Ago

The graduating class of Beaconsfield high school has but one graduate this year, namely Miss Hazel Mae Moore.
Manager Kremer has purchased a Gardner Gold picture screen for the Princess Theatre and expects to install it next week. The new screen will improve the picture and practically eliminates all eye-strain.
Automobile accidents took the lives of 187 persons in Iowa last year; railroad accidents, 137 and street car accidents, 5. In all, 1,487 persons met death by accident during 1922 and 122 committed suicide.
Fractures head this list with 247 and automobile accidents come second. Firearms were responsible for 162 death; drownings, 128; food poisoning, 104; burns, 115. Three persons were killed by lightening; 2 froze to death and 10 died from effects of excessive heat.

Years Ago

Gasoline made from coal even when it comes into general use probably will cost more than petroleum gasoline, but at least motorists won’t have to worry about shortages, a research scientist, Dr. R.W. Krebs of Baton Rouge, LA has predicted.
He estimates that coal gasoline will cost 10 to 15 cents more a gallon than gasoline currently in use, but he added that the supply will be enough to last 1,000 years.
CTL is that it is currently expensive. (In the year 1948, the average retail price of gas was $0.26. This is equivalent to $2.89 in 2021 dollars.)
At the general election last fall, the people of Ringgold County definitely expressed themselves in favor of a county hospital.
Members of the hospital board have taken each major step, as obtaining for the county first priority in the state for need of federal funds available for building a hospital; they have been able to secure by donation a site for the hospital. But further progress is impossible because funds are not adequate to start construction.

David McNeill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe McNeill of Mount Ayr received the 1973 Arion Award.
Stanley Comer and Mark Triggs, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Comer and Mr. and Mrs. Duane Triggs of Mount Ayr received the coveted Iowa Farmer Degree.
David Henderson set a new school record in the triple jump at the Bearcat Relays held in Maryville, MO Saturday. He jumped 42’1 1/2” to erase the old record of 40’ 1/4”. Henderson also won the pole vault as he cleared 11 feet.
Brent Geringer placed in both the shot and discus in the high school division of the Drake Relays. He placed 3rd in the discus with a throw of 163’4” and fifth in the shot with a toss of 52’ 3 1/2”. Placing in two events was an outstanding achievement for the Mount Ayr junior.
The Grand Opening of the Ringgold County Pioneer Center in Ellston has been scheduled for May 6 in the Ellston park.

An open house for the new Ringgold County Family Resource Center will be held Sunday April 26. The new building, which houses pre-school and child care programs is located at 302 N Lincoln, just north of the Mount Ayr community elementary.
Capitol Newsletter-Under a new graduated licensing provision signed into law by Governor Terry Branstad, a teen’s driving privileges will be restricted when they receive their first license at age 16. Teens will not be permitted to drive without a parent or guardian between the hours of 12:30 a.m. – 5 a.m.
A ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome Tyler Insurance Agency to Mount Ayr was held last week at the agency’s location, 113 N Fillmore Street, on the west side of the Mount Ayr square.
Phil Tyler of Creston purchased the agency from Bob Roe of Mount Ayr recently.
Five MACH Raider track team members will take part in the Drake Relays high school events this year. Dan Nelson in discus; the 4×100 team consists of, Jeremy Burmeister, Scott Rumple, Chris Leonard, and Adam Dredge.
Phil and Doris Kinton of Mount Ayr have been ministering at First Christian Church for 20 years and 7 months as they approach retirement from their duties as pastors this coming Sunday, April 26.

Ray “Bubba” Sorensen of Greenfield adds details to the “Freedom Rock” recently placed on Main Street of Diagonal. Sorensen has gained fame for painting patriotic scenes on the original Freedom Rock located north of Greenfield. His goal is to place Freedom Rocks throughout the state.
Births: April 18, a son, Morgan, to Eric and Melissa Friedrich.
