MICHAEL HERBERT LOHMANN
Michael Herbert Lohmann, 57, of Diagonal, IA, passed away peacefully with his family present, on April 22, 2023, at Mercy One Hospital after a battle with health issues.
Mike was born on October 5, 1965, to Herbert and Dolores Lohmann in Des Moines, IA. As a child he enjoyed playing little league baseball, camping with family, fishing, boating, riding bikes and skateboarding with neighborhood friends and playing with his pets. He was a member of the Isaac Walton youth group, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Valley High School Band. Mike graduated from Valley West High School in 1984.
Mike met Rhonda Sobotka in Des Moines IA and they were married on June 4, 1994. Mike and Rhonda were blessed with four wonderful children, Tony Lohmann, Cassidy Lohmann, Madison Lohmann and Joshua Lohmann.
Mike held various jobs over the course of his life. He was a warehouse manager at Children’s Place and a route sales representative for G & K Services in Des Moines. In 2003, Mike, Rhonda and his family moved from Des Moines to Diagonal. He was a custodian, maintenance worker and bus driver for the Diagonal Community Schools for several years. Mike was also a maintenance technician for Bunn-O-Matic in Creston and Hen Haven in Clearfield. Mike enjoyed the maintenance work because he loved fixing everything from belts to appliances.
Mike was a member of the Diagonal Lion’s Club and enjoyed his annual Labor Day responsibilities of helping with the garden tractor pull and grilling duties. Mike was a former member of the Diagonal Volunteer Fire Department until his health prevented him from active involvement. While living in Des Moines, Mike played on an adult men’s softball team for Vic and Andy’s Bar. His teammates referred to themselves as “The Swamp Boys.”
In his adulthood free time, Mike enjoyed woodworking, fixing cars and lawn mowers, doing yardwork, spending time with his favorite dog, Shadow, traveling with the family, going to parks and hiking with the family and fishing. He also enjoyed playing video games, sudoku, collecting memorabilia and going to vintage or antique stores. He biked across the state of Iowa twice with Ragbrai. Mike loved history and politics. He had a strong knowledge of historical events and was known to share his political views whether others agreed or not.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Lohmann, Diagonal, IA; children, Anthony Michael Lohmann, Diagonal, IA, Cassidy Rae Lohmann, Diagonal, IA, Madison Anne Lohmann, Des Moines, IA, Joshua Stephen Lohmann, Diagonal, IA; mother, Dolores Lohmann, West Des Moines, IA; sisters, Sheila Brown, West Des Moines, IA and Linda (David) Klein, Russellville, AR; mother-in-law, Lois Anne Sobotka, Mount Ayr, IA; bothers-in-law, Brian (Pam) Sobotka, Creston, IA, Brent Sobotka, Diagonal, IA, Darwin (Michele) Sobotka, Tucson, AZ; nieces and nephews, Sarah (Ben) Sinclair and daughter, Amelia, Waukee, IA, Jeff (Jillian) Brown, Las Cruces, NM, Shaun (Geron) Lohmann and daughter, Leai, Oklahoma City, OK, Kyle (Jamie) Phillips, Kenner, LA, Shannon (Jerry) Aycock, West Memphis, AR and daughters, Megan, Hailey, Jewel, and son, Joseph, in addition to daughter, Alyssa, Russellville, AR, Stacey (Matt) Sobotka, Creston, IA and daughters, Kyria and Mykelti, Travis Sobotka, Creston, IA, Katelyn Sobotka, Des Moines, IA, Jacob Sobotka, Des Moines, IA, along with a host and friends and additional family members.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Lohmann; brother, Steve Lohmann; father-in-law, David Sobotka; brother-in-law, Dan Sobotka, infant child of David and Lois Anne Sobotka; brothers-in-law, Bill Phillips and Kenny Brown and aunt, Marilyn Doll.
Visitation, with family present, will be held at the United Church of Diagonal on Friday, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Diagonal Cemetery followed by a luncheon served by the ladies of the United Church of Diagonal.
Memorials are to the United Church of Diagonal and the Diagonal Lions Club.
