The Mount Ayr Community Schools Board of Education held a special meeting on Friday, April 28 at 2:30 p.m. to approve the elementary principal contract offered to Chris Elwood for the 2023-2024 school year. Elwood will return to Mount Ayr Elementary on July 1, 2023.
Elwood originally planned to leave the education field and took an opportunity to challenge himself as a fundraising representative for sports teams and schools. “I was interested in trying something different, and that opportunity allowed me to stay connected to schools,” said Elwood.
Since that time, Elwood had a chance to reflect on why he was initially drawn to the education field. “I’ve missed working with the staff and students and I’m looking forward to returning this fall,” Elwood stated.
As a returning principal, his 230-day contract at a salary of $106,500 for the school year, is similar to the previous agreement Elwood had for the 2021-2022 school year.
Elwood was one of three candidates interviewed out of 16 applicants. Superintendent Jason Schaffer noted “There were at least 40 people involved in the interview process.” Comments from all interviewers were compiled prior to making their final decision.
The school board also approved the MOU agreement with SWCC for Regional Career Academy Programming through the proposed GOLD Center. Mount Ayr Schools joins Lamoni, Bedford, Central Decatur, and Diagonal in sharing potential programming offered by SWCC in the future.
