School board wraps up the school year

Concrete and personnel topped the agenda items from the Mount Ayr Community Schools board of directors meeting Monday, May 15.
Bid Awarded
The board reviewed two bids from Lutrick Construction and Walston Concrete for a new concrete pad by the football field that will support new bleachers. The low bid of $5,094 submitted by Walston Concrete of Bedford was approved.
Walston was also the only company willing to repair the drainage pit areas of the parking lot, submitting a second bid of $7,960.50 for parking lot repairs.
Personnel
The board approved the resignation of four individuals at Monday’s meeting:
• Delbert Stevens – Cook
• Kathy Vogel – Teacher Associate
• Kaci Frey – Teacher Associate
• Brittany Brown – Kindergarten Teacher
Other business
In other business the board:
• approved the contract with Southwest Iowa Driver Education for $350 per student with instruction provided by Kevin Cooper.
• approved 51 graduates for the upcoming class of 2023 commencement on Sunday, May 21.
• set the commencement date for the Class of 2024 as May 19 at 3 p.m.
• approved the sharing agreements with Diagonal School including transportation and instruction. A total of 10 students will be served under the sharing agreement.
• approved the school based supervision contract for the court liason position.
• reviewed a number of board policy updates and waived the second reading of:
• Board Member Social Media Engagement, adding more language to include board members being an extension of the school.
• Meeting Notice.
• Employee Records Regulation, shortening the length of time records need to be retained.
• Credit and Procurement Cards.
• Licensed Employee Contract Release.
• Nonresident Students, updated due to recent legislative changes.
• Instruction at a Post Secondary Educational Institution.
• Transfer of Funds, updated due to recent legislative changes.
• Care Maintenance and Disposal of School District Records, shortening the length of time records need to be retained.
• approved one fundraiser request for softball t-shirts.
High School Report
Noteworthy preparations and upcoming events at the High School included:
• School wide Decision Day Assembly was held May 1 to honor and recognize seniors future plans.
• HELP Pod Service Day supported over 40 projects in our communities.
• May 25, 2023 will be student’s last day and computer check-in, with students being dismissed early at 1:10 p.m.
• The high school is preparing to register students online through Powerschool next fall. More information will come soon as they prepare for the switch.
Elementary Report
Noteworthy programs and upcoming events at the Elementary School include:
• Preschool graduation is set for Monday, May 22 at 6:30 pm in the high school auditorium.
• Approximately 60 students are registered to attend elementary summer school Monday through Thursday June 5 – 29, 2023.
• The elementary awards assembly will be on May 25 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Students in grade 3rd – 6th will be recognized in the following areas: Honor Band, ISASP, Achievement Awards, Raider Reader High Points Club, Presidential Academic Awards.
