One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, July 25, 1923.)
The housewives who have electric washers were disappointed this morning. Got all ready to wash and found there was no power.
The American Legion had charge of the 4th of July celebration in Grinnell and Storm Lake. Each took out rain insurance.
At Grinnell there was a precipitation of two-tenths of an inch and the Legion boys collected $2,800 insurance which enabled them to pay off a mortgage on their property, the burning of which mortgage was made the subject of a big demonstration.
At Storm Lake there was enough to spoil a ball game but not enough to rake in the insurance as it lacked three-hundreths of an inch of coming up to the specifications.
Friends of Alfred Pettis, who had the misfortune to get his arm broken last week while cranking his car, are glad to know that he is feeling better and that the arm is healing nicely.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Earl Kelly of Redding was elected president of the Ringgold County Rural Letter Carrier’s Association at a meeting held Wednesday evening of last week in Mount Ayr.
Selected to fill the position of secretary-treasurer was James Carson of Diagonal.
Construction began Tuesday morning on the extensive street improvement program in Mount Ayr.
The concrete materials and Construction Co. of Cedar Rapids started by preparing the streets west and south adjoining the school house for 6” rolled stone base with single application of bituminous surface treatment and 30” cement curb and gutter.
Eight boys in finals for Dairy heifer…Eight boys are still in the running for the two dairy heifers to be awarded in the Mount Ayr Businessmens’ Club’s new dairy program.
These boys include Algie Link, Mount Ayr; Rex Galloway, Redding; Marvin Triggs, Mount Ayr; John Overholtzer, Tingley, who were selected by the 4-H county committee and Jim Pottorff, Gene Binn, Chris Hightshoe, and H.K. Lorimor who were selected by the Mount Ayr high school FFA committee.

Harold Grout, chairman of the Ringgold Count local board, has announced that young men must still register with the Selective Service system at the time of their 18th birthday even though there is no draft.
Announcement is made this week by Donald “Jake” Dailey that a complete closing out sale of the stock of the Mount Ayr Furniture Co. is now underway. He also has announced that he has purchased the former funeral home building at 301 N Taylor from Arch Dunfee of Grant City and will open another furniture store there under a different name.
The Mount Ayr Raiders baseball team moved into sectional finals at Corning last night.

Lindsay Comer of Mount Ayr was crowned the Ringgold County Fair queen for 1998 and Jacy England of Mount Ayr was crowned fair princess on opening night of the fair here Wednesday night.
Preliminary sales figures show that livestock sales totaled $30,462 at the 4-H livestock sale following the Ringgold County Fair Monday.
Winners in the fashion revue and clothing selection contest were named and state qualifiers in the “share the fun” working exhibits and educational exhibits, announced the fashion revue program Sunday evening.
Amber Taylor was chosen as the state fair participant in the senior clothing contest and Dara Creveling was named alternate in the show.
Randy Smith of Mount Ayr was inducted into the 1998 Knoxville Raceway Hall of Fame recently. Smith has been racing for twenty-three years, the first two years driving for his father, Hank Smith.

A local artist hopes her dream to bring art to the Mount Ayr square catches on in a big way.
Lisa Conklin has painted a 8 foot by 8 foot mural that currently hangs on the bell tower at the First Christian Church.
Chania Vos reigns as the junior cowgirl queen at the Ringgold County Fair. She will compete at the Iowa State Fair August 9 at the Jacobson Exhibition Center.
Logan Wimer receives two buckles commemorating her placement as Reserve Champion in the girls cutting competition at the National High School Rodeo finals held July 14-20 in Rock Springs, WY.
