One Hundred Years Ago

Mount Ayr will pay tribute to President Warren G. Harding, who passed away August 2, at a memorial service to be held Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Methodist Church.
Calvin Coolidge takes oath of office, today August 8 at 2:47 a.m. The ceremony took place in the living room of the residence of the new President’s father, John C. Coolidge. The oath of office was administered by the father who is a notary republic.
Peace officers were on duty at the Kellerton reunion and although the crowd was orderly and there was no evidence of law violation on the grounds, vigilance on the part of the guardians of the peace resulted in the arrest of seven men who were engaged in gambling.
The gamblers had established themselves behind the hedge northeast of the ball ground and on Thursday afternoon were given a genuine surprise. A little less than $200 was on the board, or oil cloth which was being used as part of the equipment when the officers arrived on the scene and gave the offenders opportunity to look into the muzzles of two .38 caliber revolvers.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Lowell Greene, the first of this week, purchased the Huggins Roller Rink located on Hwy 169 & 2 in Mount Ayr.
The rink was previously owned and operated by Asa Huggins, who bought the business in 1946 from F.L. Bryant.
One of the largest crowds ever attending a public sale in the county was present at the closing out sale of Jack Hutchinson & Son in north Mount Ayr.
A crowd of over 1,000 persons was present. The Hutchinson property, one block north and one block east of the schoolhouse was sold at public auction Saturday, August 2 to C.C. Novak of Diagonal, for $6,000.
According to the 1940 US Census, immigrants from Holland and second generation Americans of Dutch desent numbered 372,384. There are no statistics available on the millions who are partly descended from Netherland stock. Among them was Klaes Martensen Van Roosevelt, a farmer from Holland’s Zeeland province, who arrived in the New World between 1644 & 1649. He became the common ancestor of seven presidents of the U.S.: James Madison, Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S. Grant, William H. Taft, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

There’s a lot of curbs when you start to paint ‘em-this was the one-man consensus of Don Zollman when he started to paint the curbs in a youth work program for the city.
Fourteen year old Don and partner Casey Monaghan had been at the job two days and hesitated to say how long it might take before they would have the job done.
The high school athletic career of three Mount Ayr seniors ended last week when Corning stopped the Raiders 5-0 in sectional baseball action. But the feats accomplished by David Henderson, David McNeill, and Kurt Nichols deserve prominent mention.
Together the three earned 49 athletic letters, McNeill gathering 17, in his four years at the Tall Corn Conference school. Nichols and Henderson had 16 a piece. McNeill’s total includes 4 in baseball and golf, 3 each in basketball, football and track. Henderson earned 4 in track and baseball, three in football and basketball and 2 in golf.
Nichols earned four in baseball and golf, three in football and basketball, and 2 in track.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

The death of 15 month old Ringgold County infant has been ruled a homicide, according to Ringgold County attorney Clint Spurrier. Spurrier did report that as of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been filed in the incident.
Paul Glendenning of Mount Ayr placed third in the 25 lap NASCAR Late Model Feature race at the Adams County Speedway at Corning on July 25, Glendenning is currently ranked fourth overall in the Late Model point standings.

Ten Years Ago

A long time Mount Ayr business is closing its doors.
Insurance and Real Estate, Inc. located on the southeast corner of the square has been sold to Cunning Insurance Co., Inc. of Mount Ayr effective August 1.
Norm and Doris Klejch have owned and operated the business for over 30 years.
At approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday August 3, the body of a white 31 year old female was found in a cornfield along 120th Street about one quarter mile west of Lenox. Authorities have identified the body as that of Maggie Weaver of Brookfield, MO formerly of Creston where she was known as Maggie Dodson.
According to authorities, the woman had been missing for several days.
A former resident has been selected a as district governor of Lions International. Fred Stark, former band instructor in Mount Ayr, is officially a district governor for Lions International and represents the southeast part of the state. This occurred at the recent international convention in Hamburg, Germany.
