The Mount Ayr Raiderettes improved to 1-1 in the Pride of Iowa Conference last Tuesday when they traveled north to Greenfield to play Nodaway Valley.
The result was a 3-2, come-from-behind victory.
The victory was the first for Mount Ayr since the 2018 against Nodaway Valley. That span of six straight wins saw Mount Ayr struggle to score set wins. In that span, the Wolverines outscored the Raiderettes 18-0 in set wins. The Raiderettes had to come back from down 2-0 in the best-of-five match.
“We were excited and pumped. It was a nice comeback after winning the first two sets. It’s another step in our development,” said Mount Ayr volleyball coach Kristen Graham.
Mount Ayr lost the first set 25-20 to trail 1-0 in the match. Nodaway Valley would take a 2-0 lead after winning the second set 25-17.
Then Mount Ayr made a comeback.
The Raiderettes won the third set 25-22 to cut the Wolverine lead to 2-1. Mount Ayr would tie the match at 2-2 with a 25-22 fourth set win, too. In the fifth and deciding set, the Raiderettes would win 15-13 while claiming the match 3-2.
The Raiderettes traveled to Osceola on Thursday, September 7 for a triangular with Pleasantville and the host school Clarke.
There, the Raiderettes split the two matches to improve to 4-4. Mount Ayr beat Clarke but fell to Pleasantville.
Against Pleasantville, Mount Ayr lost the match 2-0 by scores of 25-18 and 25-11 in the best of three set match. Mount Ayr had 41 attack attempts with eight kills in the match.
Aubree Shields had 12 attacks and four kills to lead the team. Hayden Ruggles led in assists with six and was the top Mount Ayr server in the match going 9-for-9. Breya Nickle led Mount Ayr players in digs with four.
Against Clarke, the Raiderettes needed three sets to get by the Indians.
The Raiderettes won the first set, 27-25 to take a 1-0 match lead. In the second set, Clarke beat Mount Ayr, 25-15 to even the match at 1-1. In the third and deciding set, the Raiderettes got the momentum and ran with it, winning the third set 15-7 to claim the match 2 sets to 1.
Mount Ayr had 76 attacks in the match and 22 kills. Breya Nickle led with 22 attacks and nine kills while Aubree Shield had 18 attacks and seven kills. Hayden Ruggles had eleven assists and Olivia Huntington led in digs with 11. Janna Irving led in serving, going 10-for-11 with two aces. Ashlyn Murphy had three ace serves in the match.
“I am happy with our consistency over the last few matches. We have had moments where we have been sluggish, but we get back in our rhythm and they know how to get out of it,” said Graham.
