One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, October 10, 1923.)
Frank Lundin, the young Swede from New London, Henry county who last year won the championship in pitching horseshoes and is state champion this year, visited Frank Jackson of Kellerton who previously held both state and national records.
The two men gave an exhibition game in St. Joseph, MO. While in the city, J.C. Cobb, proprietor of a large shoe store, took the shoes off the two Iowa pitchers’ feet and placed them in the show window along with those of Frank James, the notorious outlaw, saying that he wanted the “Three Franks’” shoes for relics, giving the two Frank’s a pair of new $10 shoes in return.
About 13 car loads of juniors left directly after school last night for Teale’s woods, southwest of town. They had a very enjoyable picnic playing leap frog, blackman, flying dutchmen, etc. The supper consisted of wieners, buns, pickles and fruit.

The senior class held a meeting Monday for the purpose of selecting nominees for our homecoming celebration. This year the senior class has decided to do something a little different in that they are going to have a homecoming king as well as queen. After much deliberation the candidates for queen were decided as follows: Margaret Turner, Catherine Conant, Beth Richardson, Leota Lovitt and Carralou Greene. Candidates for king were as follows: Bob Drake, Bud Butler, Jim Mahan, Daryl Holden and Richard Kirby.

Another outbreak of vandalism has hit the community according to Mayor Raymond Hutchinson and with serious consequences.
The mayor cited removal of a stop sign by vandals at Polk and Monroe Streets a block east of the city hall as the cause of a two car accident lasts week.
An Ellston man has opened an electrical contracting business in that town, according to an ad in this week’s Record News. He is Norman Jennings, who grew up in the Ellston area and graduated from high school there.
Max Pool resigns from school board. Dr. Pool still had one year to serve of a 3 year term. William Warin of Mount Ayr was appointed to fill the vacancy and has agreed to serve.

Mount Ayr Community homecoming activities get in full swing Thursday.
King candidates this year include; Brooks Brown, Ben Dorr, Cale Hainline, Scott Poore and Brandon Yoder. Queen candidates are Rachel Derscheid, Jessica Gepner, Annie Johnson, Katrina Larsen and Kary Mitchell.
A ribbon cutting was held for a new business, Ricker Air Conditioning and Heating. It will be headquarted in the former Prentis Ceramic building on Hwy 2 west of Mount Ayr.
Student Ayr: students were asked what their top ten favorite game shows are. The results were as follows; 1. The Price is Right, 2. Press Your Luck, 3. Love Connection, 4. Wheel of Fortune, 5. Let’s Make a Deal, 6. Family Feud, 7. Jeopardy, 8. $25,000 Pyramid, 9. Pictionary and 10. Hollywood Squares.

Ten Years Ago

A significant piece of Ringgold County history can be found hanging in the home of a life-long county resident.
Ringgold county’s first American flag is on display at the home of Sandy Taylor in Mount Ayr. Taylor’s great-great grandmother, Mary Melissa Lesan, is credited with the flags creation.
A new speaker system brings music to Mount Ayr square. Anyone who has walked around the Mount Ayr square recently may have been surprised to hear a song in the air. The music is a result of a Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce project and the brainchild of former Chamber president Darin Dolecheck.
