The 2023 football season is near its conclusion as the state championship games for all classes are this week.
Last week, the honors list for Class A District 6 was released after the final team in the district lost.
The Madrid Tigers, who won the District 6 title, advanced to the UNI-Dome and the Class A semifinals before losing to West Hancock.
The All-District honors list included 12 Mount Ayr Raiders.
Honored for Mount Ayr were Trevin Victor, Kash Wasteney, Tucker Larson, Tucker Knox, Colton Dredge, Bracken Collier, Dyson Thompson, Tyler Martin, Matt Larson, Dalton Barnes, Tate Dugan, and Jackson Ruggles.
Earning First Team All-District offense honors were junior Tyler Martin at running back and senior Matt Larson at offensive line. Martin led the Raiders in rushing with 659 yards on 99 carries with a 6.7-yard average and 14 touchdowns. He also caught 15 passes for 169 yards. On defense, he had a team-high 71 tackles with two sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. He also recovered four fumbles and intercepted two passes.
Larson was on the line and helped the Raiders collect over 3,000 yards of total offense with 782 passing yards and 2,241 yards rushing. The offense produced 36 touchdowns this season with 29 coming on the ground.
On defense, Larson had 51.5 tackles, 2 sacks, and 6.5 tackles for loss.
Earning First Team All-District defense honors were senior defensive lineman Dalton Barnes, linebacker Tate Dugan, and defensive back Jackson Ruggles. Dugan was also the first-team punter in the district.
Barnes had a team-high 6.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss to go with 55.5 tackles and a fumble recovery from his defensive line spot. Dugan was third on the team in tackles with 43.5 with a sack and four tackles for loss. He also has two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Offensively, Dugan was second on the team in rushing with 612 yards on 110 carries for a 5.6-yard average and three touchdowns. Dugan led Mount Ayr in receiving yards with 336 and receiving touchdowns with four on 17 receptions.
Ruggles was one of the top defensive backs in the district with seven interceptions for 62 yards. He was also a dangerous return man leading the Raiders on kick-off returns with 182 yards and punt return yards.
Ruggles had 30.5 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss. Offensively, in his first year as the varsity starting quarterback, Ruggles passed for 736 yards on 52 completions with a 54.7-percent completion rate. He threw for six touchdowns and added 489 rushing yards on 85 carries with a 5.8-yard average and five touchdowns.
Mount Ayr had four players selected to the second team. They were senior offensive linemen Tucker Knox and Colton Dredge, sophomore defensive lineman Bracken Collier, and freshman running back Dyson Thompson.
A trio of juniors were honorable mention selections. They were defensive back Trevin Victor, offensive lineman Kash Wasteney, and defensive lineman Tucker Larson.
Three players in District 6 were named Golden Award winners. The Golden Award is an award given to players who are injured and miss at least half of the season and would have been first-team all-district selections.
Those honored on the offensive side of the ball were Lynnville-Sully senior Corder Noun Harder and Central Decatur senior Jayden Broich.
Honored on the defensive side of the ball was Madrid senior Jake Leonard. Broich was injured in the Cardinal’s season opener at Earlham. He would miss the remainder of the season. Broich caught four passes for 27 yards and had half a tackle this season.
