The Mount Ayr boy’s wrestling team traveled to Leon last Friday for a rare school day meet that took up most of Friday.
There, the Raiders placed 15th out of 16 scoring teams with 44 points. Humboldt won the meet with a team score of 212 points followed by Winterset with 209.5 points for second and Panorama with 162 points for third place.
Other POI teams at the meet were Martensdale-St. Mary’s, Central Decatur, Wayne, and Bedford.
The Raiders will wrestle on Thursday, December 14 at Nodaway Valley when the Raiders will tangle with East Union, Wayne, and the Wolverines. The annual Pride of Iowa Conference meet is scheduled for Friday at SW Valley in Corning. That meeting will be the final action for the Raiders before the Christmas holiday.
The Raider’s best finisher came from Brock Shaha in the 120-pound weight class. He pinned Sebastian Shaw from Albia in the quarterfinals in 3:00 and won by an 8-2 decision over Owen Mayall from Humboldt in the semifinals. In the finals, Shaha lost a close 4-2 decision to Emmitt Newton from Davis County to finish as the runner-up.
Bracken Collier won two matches at the tournament and improved to 5-6. Collier lost his first match but won three consolation round matches including the 7th-place match. Collier pinned Konner Smith from Ottumwa in 3:39 and pinned Nolan Cremer from Davis County in 3:22 in the 7th place match.
Conlee Stark placed 7th in the 150-pound weight class. Stark improved to 9-5 with three wins. He pinned Caden Mann from Bedford in 3:38 in the first round and pinned Drake Steil in 2:46 in the consolation round. Stark also won the 7th place match by pinning Blake Schwartz from Panorama who came into the match with seven victories. Stark got the fall in 4:35.
Also wrestling at the meet but not placing was Jeremiah Gilliland at 106, Tate Schaefer at 132, Nathan Mederos at 138, Ty Noble at 144, and Jonathan Morales at 285.
