It was a big week last week for the Mount Ayr boy’s basketball team as Mount Ayr split two Pride of Iowa Conference games.
The Raiders beat rival Lenox 50-44 on Tuesday and lost a close game at Bedford 48-37.
The Raiders won their third game in a row with a six-point win, 50-44 over Lenox on Tuesday, December 5. The Raiders led 13-12 after the first quarter but watched Lenox take a three-point halftime lead, 28-25 after using a 16-12 run in the second quarter.
Mount Ayr grabbed the lead in the game in the third quarter, outscoring Lenox 13-9 to see the Raiders up 38-37 after three quarters.
In the final quarter, Mount Ayr would outscore Lenox 12-7 to secure the win.
In the second half, Mount Ayr outscored Lenox 25-16.
Mount Ayr shot 43.5 percent from the floor in the game and made seven three-pointers.
Jackson Ruggles led Mount Ayr in scoring with 19 points while Tyler Martin added 14 points.
Gabe Funk led all scorers with 31 points on 13-for-27 shooting. Funk made four three-pointers in the game. The two teams will play at Lenox on January 19.
Mount Ayr fell to 3-2 after losing to Bedford 48-37 last Friday.
The Bulldogs have not lost this season so far and share the lead in the POI standings with Wayne. The Bulldogs have won two of the last three meetings with Mount Ayr. Mount Ayr had won seven straight over Bedford before this current run.
Mount Ayr led 10-8 after the first quarter, but a big 17-5 run in the second quarter by Bedford gave the Bulldogs a halftime lead of ten points, 25-15.
In the end, that lead was too much to overcome. Mount Ayr trailed 38-27 after the third quarter and couldn’t make up ground in the final quarter as each team scored ten points in the fourth.
Mount Ayr was led by Jackson Ruggles and Tyler Martin with 11 and 10 points. Ruggles had three assists and Martin had two. Ryce Reynolds led in rebounding with five while Martin and Tate Dugan each had four. Mount Ayr only attempted 37 shots in the game and shot 32-percent. The Raiders did make four three-pointers in the game with Ruggles making two and Trevin Victor and Martin each making one.
Bedford played only six players in the game. Garrison Motsinger led all scorers with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Cal Peterman added 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots. Bedford shot 44-perecnt from the floor and made two three pointers.
The two teams will play again at Mount Ayr on January 16.
