The Mount Ayr boy’s wrestling team traveled to New Sharon on Saturday, January 6 to compete in the North Mahaska Invitational.
There, the Raiders placed 11th with 33 team points with 33. Solon won the tournament with 230 points followed by Grinnell with 169, and North Mahaska third with 140.
The two top-place winners for Mount Ayr were fourth-place finishes by Jeremiah Gilliland at 106 and Brock Shaha at 120. Bracken Collier collected the other place, a fifth-place finish at 165.
Gilliland improved to 7-8 and placed fourth at 106. Gilliland won one match at the tournament by fall over Hayden Rietveld in 1:57.
Shaha improved to 17-3 and placed fourth at 120. Shaha pinned David Eckert in the quarterfinals from Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in 1:20. He lost in the semifinals, and fought back to the third-place match before falling to fourth.
Collier won one match and improved to 11-14 and placed fifth at 165. Collier pinned Evan Haughey from Montezuma in 2:00.
Wrestling at the tournament but not placing were Nathan Mederos at 126, Tate Schaefer 132, Ty Noble 144, Conlee Stark 150, Tegan Hill 157, and Jonathan Morales at 285.
