The Mount Ayr girl’s basketball team got their only look at the POI-leading Martensdale-St. Mary’s Blue Devils last Friday when they came to town for their POI match-up.
The Blue Devils brought with them the No. 3 ranking in Class 1A and an unblemished POI record at 5-0. Mount Ayr, having rested and gotten healthy over the holiday break, watched MTSM race to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter of their game on the way to a 70-47 win.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s improved to 8-3 with the win and stayed unbeaten in the POI with a record of 6-0. Mount Ayr fell to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the POI.
Mount Ayr was to play a pair of road POI games this week, but the weather altered that. Mount Ayr was to travel to Corning on Tuesday to play Southwest Valley while on Thursday, the Raiderettes are to take on Central Decatur in Leon.
The Blue Devils came into the game having lost to SE Polk back on December 21, 78-42. MTSM improved to 11-7 over Mount Ayr in the last 18 meetings between the schools. MTSM has won three in a row now over Mount Ayr.
Mount Ayr had two double-digit scorers and two that were close to leading the Raiderettes in scoring. Breya Nickle and Jaxy Knight each had ten points in the game while Dannie Stewart and Izzy Gilbertson each scored nine points. Gilbertson led Mount Ayr in rebounds with 8 while Stewart led in assists with four.
MTSM was led by 29 points from senior guard Brynnly German. German is the 7th leading scorer in the POI so far this year. German was 11-for-16 from the floor, shot 50-percent from the three-point line, and made 4-for-6 from the free-throw line in the game. She recorded a double-double by adding ten rebounds to go with five assists and five steals. Carolyn Amfahr scored 17 points including making four three-pointers and Campbell German scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, had five steals, and dished out four assists. Senior Sophia Shannon did not play in the game. Shannon averages 11.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists a game.
The Blue Devils and Raiderettes played closely in the second quarter with MTSM holding a one-point advantage, 17-16, and a lead at halftime of 40-27.
The Blue Devils came out firing from the three-point line, making 3-of-6 attempts in the first three minutes of the game. MTSM got two threes from Brynnly German and another from Carolyn Amfahr along with a transition bucket from Ellie Baker to cap the 11-0 run to start the game. Mount Ayr called a time-out with 4:54 left in the first quarter and regrouped. For the rest of the quarter, the Raiderettes played the Blue Devils evenly 12-11. The rest of the half was evenly played with MTSM out-scoring Mount Ayr 29-27, but the 11-0 run to start the game was too much to overcome.

Izzy Gilbertson made 1-of-2 free throws to get the score at 11-1 with 4:32 left in the first quarter. Back-to-back buckets by Campbell and Brynnly German extended the Blue Devils lead to 15-1 with just under 4-minutes left. Gilbertson sank two more free throws to put the score at 15-3.
In the final 2 minutes of the quarter, Mount Ayr got two free throws from Jaxy Knight, a steal and basket by Dannie Stewart, a Stewart rebound putback, and two Stewart free throws with 2.1 left in the quarter to get to 11 points.
In the second quarter, a three-pointer by Jaylee Shaffer on the first Raiderette possession, cut the score to single digits for the first time since the opening minutes of the first quarter, 23-14.
MTSM would answer at the other end on another Amfahr three-pointer to set the score at 26-14 with 7:30 left before halftime. Amfahr’s third three of the half with 6:30 left in the quarter gave MTSM a 31-14 lead. Shaffer cut the MTSM lead to 14 with her second three-pointer, 31-17 and a MaKel Jones 3-point play cut the MTSM lead to 11, 31-20 with 4:49 left in the half. At the other end, Campbell German connected for a three-pointer, putting the lead back to 14, 34-20.
Two Breya Nickle free throws set the score at 34-22, and a three-pointer by Stewart got the Raiderettes to within nine points, 34-25 with 3:30 left before halftime.
MTSM would outscore Mount Ayr 6-2 the rest of the half to take a 40-27 halftime lead. MTSM would lead 52-34 going to the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, MTSM would outscore Mount Ayr 18 to 13 and stretch out their lead to the final margin.
