The Mount Ayr girl’s basketball team had an interesting week with four games.
Due to weather-rescheduled games and a pair of regularly scheduled games, the result was a four-game week for the Raiderettes.
Mount Ayr would drop a pair of games early in the week to Stanton and Nodaway Valley, but rebound with late-week wins against Central Decatur and East Union.
The wins set the Raiderette’s record at 13-6 overall and 10-2 in the POI. The Raiders became the third team in the POI with 10 wins in conference play going to the final week of regular season games.
The Raiderettes also clinched their 18th straight winning season going back to the 2006-07 season.
The week started rough with an overtime loss at non-conference foe Stanton. The game was close at halftime with Mount Ayr trailing by two points, 25-23 at halftime. The game would be tied at 46 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, Stanton outscored the Raiderettes 10-6 to claim the win, 56-52.
The loss evened Mount Ayr’s record against non-conference foes at 3-3 this season.
The loss snapped the five-game win streak by Mount Ayr. The Raiderettes shot 45 percent for the game and made two three-pointers. Stanton struggled from the floor, but got to the free throw line 25 times in the game, making 20 of those attempts.
Izzy Gilbertson led Mount Ayr with a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Breya Nickle contributed a 15-point, 7-rebound, 5-assist game. Jaxy Knight had 13 assists, 6 rebounds, and five points.
The Raiderettes hosted the 8th-ranked team in Class 2A, Nodaway Valley Wolverines at home. The Raiderettes would give the Wolverines their closest POI game of the season other than their two-point loss at Martensdale-St. Mary’s, in a ten-point, 57-47 last Tuesday.
Nodaway Valley led only by two points after the first quarter, 10-8. Each team scored 11 points in the second quarter as the halftime score was 21-19 Wolverines.
In the second half, the Wolverines would do just enough to get past Mount Ayr, out-scoring the Raiderettes 36-28 in the second half.
No quarter was separated by more than five points between the two teams. Added up, however, Nodaway Valley claimed a ten-point win. The win was the ninth straight for NV over Mount Ayr since the 2020 season.
Mount Ayr got 45 of their points from their starters. Dannie Stewart and Izzy Gilbertson each had 14 points to lead Mount Ayr in scoring. Breya Nickle had 8 points and 10 rebounds and Jaxy Knight had 7 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Gilbertson led the Raiderettes in rebounding with 14.
Central Decatur hosted Mount Ayr on Thursday, February 1, and saw their guests leave with a 60-26 win.
Mount Ayr led by five after the first quarter 13-8 and 31-19 at halftime. Right before halftime Central Decatur sophomore and leading scorer Breegan Lindsey was injured and did not return. The Cardinals offense didn’t either in the second half as CD managed only seven second-half points and were outscored 19-7 in the second half.
Abigail Leahy led CD in scoring with 7 points and 6 rebounds. Lindsey scored 6 and Makenna Perkins scored 5 points. Mount Ayr had three double-digit scores in Jaxy Knight with 16, Breya Nickle with 13, and Izzy Gilbertson with 10. Knight had 11 assists in the game.
The Raiders ended the week with a game at home against East Union. There, the Raiderettes topped the 60-point mark for the second straight game with a 69-18 win. In their two late-week games, Mount Ayr outscored their foes 129-44. The win was the second in a row for Mount Ayr.
Mount Ayr took command of the game in the first quarter, out-scoring East Union 23-3. Mount Ayr followed that up with a 24-8 run in the second quarter to put the game away by halftime with a 47-11 lead.
For good measure, Mount Ayr kept the points rolling, out-scoring the Eagles 20-0 in the third quarter to take a 67-11 lead to the final quarter.
Mount Ayr got 25 big points from Breya Nickle along with 5 rebounds and 5 steals to lead the Raiderettes. Izzy Gilbertson kept her fantastic post-play going with another double-double with 16 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Jaxy Knight and Dannie Stewart each had 11 points.
Mount Ayr hosted Interstate-35 Monday night for senior night. The Raiderettes will host Sidney on Thursday night in the first round of the Class 1A Region 3 tournament. The winner of that game will play at Lamoni on February 13 against the winner of Lamoni (13-4) and Hamburg (1-15). The Regional Semifinal is scheduled for February 16 at Fremont-Mills.
