Shaha District Champ, Stark District Runner-Up
A pair of Mount Ayr boy’s wrestlers qualified for the state tournament this week in Des Moines.
Qualifying for the state tournament were Brock Shaha at 113 and Conlee Stark at 150.
Shaha won the 113-pound weight class and Stark was the runner-up at 150.
The state wrestling tournament starts this Wednesday and runs through Friday.
Shaha, a junior, came into the tournament ranked No. 6 in Class 1A in the 113-pound weight class. Shaha was the top seed in the five-person bracket.
Shaha had a bye in the quarterfinals and pinned fourth-seeded Chase Slaybaugh from AC/GC in the semifinals. In the finals, Shaha would win the weight class, with a fall over third-seeded Brayden Maeder from SW Valley in the finals in 3:20.
The match was 2-2 with Shaha having a takedown and Maeder a reversal before Shaha earned the fall to improve to 36-4. Maeder would also go to state as the runner-up in the weight class.
Stark was the runner-up at the tournament in the 150-pound weight class.
Stark was seeded second at the weight class. Stark pinned 7th-seeded Caden Cook from Coon Rapids-Bayard in 1:39 in the quarterfinals.
Stark advanced to the finals with a fall over 3rd seeded Ely Rodriguez from SW Valley in the semifinals in 4:56.
In the finals, Stark met top-seeded Taven Moore from Riverside where Moore would win by fall in 3:52.
Stark would advance as the runner-up at the district after holding criteria over Ely Rodriguez, the third place winner.
Riverside won the district meet with 211 points and will send eight state qualifiers with six district champions and two district runners-up. AC/GC was the runner-up at state with 175 points and the Chargers will send six qualifiers including two district champs and four district runners-up. AHSTW was third with 130 points and had a pair of district champs. Central Decatur placed fifth with 68 team points.
Wrestling at the district meet, but not placing were Jeremiah Gilliland at 106, Nathan Mederos at 126, Tate Schaefer at 132, Ty Noble at 144, Bracken Collier at 165, and Jonathan Morales at 285. All of them got two matches at the district tournament. Most were 0-2, but a couple did win a match.
Schaefer won one match at the tournament, a fall in 3:30 over Braydon Reineke from Coon Rapids-Bayard in the consolation round. Schaefer ends the year 15-26. Noble won one match at the tournament, a fall over SW Valley’s Ashton Boswell in 3:58 in the consolation round. Noble ended the season 13-25.
The State Class 1A wrestling tournament began Wednesday in Des Moines. The round will kick off four days of wrestling with First-round matches and first-round consolation matches.
Each weight class will have 24 wrestlers in it this year.
At 113, Brock Shaha is seeded 5th. The top four seeds are No. 1 Mason Shirk (46-1) from Wilton, No. 2 Cooper Hinz (33-6) from Jesup, No. 3 Nic Brase (41-3) from Nashua-Plainfield, and No. 4 Dallas Canoyer (38-5) from Earlham.
Shaha has a bye in the first round and will wrestle the winner of 21st-seeded sophomore Logan Pate from Woodbury Central who is 22-18, and 12th-seeded freshman Jaxon Page from Alta-Aurelia who is 44-3.
At 150, Conlee Start is seeded 22nd. The top four seeds are No. 1 Keaton Moeller (42-1) a sophomore from Starmont, No. 2 Danny Kinsella (36-4) a senior from Treynor, No. 3 Kaden Abbas (31-3) a senior from AGWSR, and No. 4 Sampson Hensen (41-4) a senior from Martensdale-St. Mary’s. Stark will wrestle 11th-seed Jacob McGargill from Shenandoah (43-4) in the first round at state.
