Two Mount Ayr athletes were among the Class 1A state wrestling tournament qualifiers last week in Des Moines.
Going to state were Conlee Stark and Brock Shaha. The duo picked up valuable state experience and both will return next season.

At 113, Brock Shaha placed third and ended the season 41-5. He scored 20 team points for the Raiders and was the 5th seed at the state meet. Shaha came to state-ranked No. 6 at 113 in Class 1A.
In the first round, Shaha had a bye. In the second round, he pinned 12th-seeded Jaxon Page from Alta/Aurelia in 3:25 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Shaha would break a scoreless match after the first period with an escape and takedown to lead 3-0 before earning the pin.
In the quarterfinals, Shaha fell by an 8-3 decision to 4th-seeded Dallas Canoyer from Earlham, sending him to the consolation round. Canoyer beat 20th-seeded Preston Province from West Sioux in the second round to get there.
In the match, Shaha trailed 4-1 after the first period and second period. Shaha was outscored 4-2 in the final period for an 8-3 score.
Shaha’s points were all on escape points.
In the consolations, Shaha would earn a pin over 8th-seeded Kalab Kuhl from Logan-Magnolia in 3:51 to stay alive in the bracket.
Shaha led 4-1 on a reversal and takedown before the pin. Next, Shaha would win a 2-0 decision over 9th-seeded Tommy Booth from Pleasantville. Shaha led 2-0 after a reversal with 1:11 left in the second period. That would be enough for the win.
In the consolation semifinals, Shaha would advance to the 3rd place match after winning a 3-0 decision over 2nd-seeded Cooper Hinz from Jesup.
In the third-place match, Shaha would face Canoyer again, and again defeat him, this time by a 6-2 decision.
Shaha trailed 2-1 after the first period but scored a second-period takedown to take a 3-2 lead. In the final period, Shaha would extend his lead to 4-2 with an escape early and then put the match away with a takedown with 38 seconds left in the match to get the four-point margin of victory.

Conlee Stark was the runner-up at districts and was seeded 22nd at state.
In the first round, Stark was pinned by Jacob McGargill, the 11th seed from Shenandoah in 5:26. That sent Stark to the consolation round. McGargill reached the semifinals before losing and placed 6th.
In the consolation round, Stark faced 5th-seeded Riley Radke from Missouri Valley. Radke was upset in the 12th seed in the second round. In their consolation match, Stark would fall by an 18-2 tech fall in 5:35.
The loss ended Stark’s season at 34-17. Stark will be back for his junior season next year.
Don Bosco won the Class 1A state title with 183.5 points. Alburnett was second with 152 points and Wilton was third with 144 points.
There were eight Pride of Iowa Conference teams represented at the state tournament. Nodaway Valley was the top POI school to finish with a 19th-place team finish with 46 points.
