Timberwolves stun Raiders in district game

The Mount Ayr Raiders were stunned in the first round of the postseason, at home, 55-42 in a loss to Southwest Valley.
The loss ended the Raiders season with a record of 14-6.
The loss was the first in six games for the Raiders. The win was the first for SW Valley over the Raiders since the 2016 season. The Raiders beat the Timberwolves in both games during the regular season this year, 55-46 on January 25 and 60-54 back on December 1.
Southwest Valley started the game well with a 5-0 run. The Timberwolves would hold the Raiders to zero points until a three-pointer by Ryce Reynolds with 5:30 left in the first quarter broke the seal on the bucket, setting the score at 5-3.
Tyler Martin’s two free throws tied the game at 5 with 4:50 left in the first quarter and a Tate Dugan hoop in the lane gave the Raiders their first lead of the game at 7-5 with 3:28 left in the quarter. A SW Valley rebound putback by Ethan James tied the game at 7 with about 2 minutes left in the quarter.
The Raiders trailed 19-12 with 5:10 left in the half after a 6-2 run by the Timberwolves. A Dugan bucket got the Raiders to within 19-14. A Dugan rebound put back later cut the SW Valley lead to four points, 23-19 with 2:30 left in the half. By halftime, the Timberwolves led by seven points, 30-23.
Early in the second half, the Timberwolves took a 10-point, 33-23 lead. The Raiders would claw back into the game, using a 5-0 run to cut the SW Valley lead to five points, 33-28. Two free throws by Ryce Reynolds with 1:06 left in the third quarter. SW Valley led by 9 points at the end of the third quarter. The Raiders fell behind by 11 with just under seven minutes to play in the game. The Raiders were outscored 11-7 in the fourth quarter taking away the hope of a comeback.
Mount Ayr was led by scoring by Tyler Martin with 14 points and Rycec Reynolds with 10 points. Tate Dugan added nine points and 10 rebounds.
SW Valley had three players score in double figures led by Roman Keefe with 15 points. Alex Morgan added 14 points and 6 rebounds and Cael Hogan chipped in 11.
The Raiders will graduate seniors Aidan Murphy, and Ryce Reynolds. The Raiders will return four of their five starters and likely be one of the teams to beat in the POI next season.
