One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, March 26, 1924)
The grand jury, which was in session three days the first week of the term, was recalled by County Attorney Hayes last Wednesday morning and a bill was returned that evening charging four local men with the crime of gambling.
Pleas of guilty were entered Thursday evening and sentences pronounced by Judge Carter, fines aggregating $1,300 being assessed, $500 of which was promptly paid by two members of the party, the other two being committed to the county jail to serve sentences of 90 and 150 days respectively.
Delphos News: Mr. and Mrs. Ben Harroff and the girls basketball team went last Wednesday to Iowa Falls to attend the Iowa state tournament. They played Audubon and were beaten the first time this year. The girls received the congratulations of many friends at home and away for the fine team work and fair play. They returned home yesterday.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Mary Ellen Rees, 14 years of age and an eighth grade student of Liberty #8 taught by Mrs. Mary Drake, was adjudged the winner of the Ringgold county spelling contest, which was held Saturday in Mount Ayr.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rees and will represent the county in the state contest to be held next month in Des Moines.
Winner of first place in the reading contest for town schools was Lucy Ann Heimke, 12 years old and a seventh grade student of the Diagonal schools. Lucy Ann is the daughter of Mrs. C.W. Campbell of Diagonal and her instructor is Mrs. Lucille Meloy.
A gift of $500 to the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr was the source of inspiration for the purchase of a $4,800 Baldwin organ which will be installed in the local church within the next two weeks.
The liberal gift of $500 came from Thomas Beasley, insurance executive of Dallas, TX, who made the contribution after the death of his mother, the late Mrs. C.H. Beasley, a faithful member of the church.

Fifty Years Ago

Winners in the Mount Ayr Cub Scouts pinewood derby are as follows: first place, Paul Glendenning; second place, Jeff Craft; third place, Todd Lynch; and best design went to Kelly Woollums.
Announcement is made this week of a change in a Mount Ayr business. Robert Bastow of Bastow Feed and Grain, announced he is taking in two partners in the business, his son Keith Bastow and his son-in-law, Jim Webb.
Brent Geringer won the shot at the State Federation indoor track meet at Graceland college in Lamoni Saturday with a toss of 61’5 1/2”. This is one of three times in Iowa prep history that a high school boy has exceeded sixty feet in the indoors shot put.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Bad news came in big numbers at the Mount Ayr city council Monday. When bids were opened for the project to upgrade the city sewer plant to meet Iowa Department of Natural Resources standards, they were sky high.
The city of Mount Ayr officially has a new mayor, Clyde Summers, a retired school principal, was named to the position by the council at the meeting Monday night. Summers will replace Max Anderson, who resigned from the position at the Feb. 17 meeting.
The 25th anniversary of the Tingley meal site was celebrated with an observance at the community center building in Tingley Monday noon.
Six MACHS students will be competing in the state individual speech contest at Ankeny high school in Ankeny Saturday. Students advancing are: Rachel Derscheid, Josh Haley, Anglea Hunt, Amy Hynek, Laura Jones and Scott Lauritsen.
Post season honors have been announced this week for Cara Smith, senior center of the MACHS girls basketball team. Smith has been named to the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association Academic All-State girls basketball team for accomplishments on and off the court. In addition she has been chosen to play in the Iowa Coaches Assoc. All Star game Sunday, April 11.

Ten Years Ago

A summary of the 2013-14 winter season complied by Harry Hillaker, the state climatologist with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, shows this was the coldest winter in the past 35 years and the ninth coldest winter in 141 years on record. Temperatures this winter season averaged 14.7 degrees below normal.
Alan Smith, former owner and editor of the Mount Ayr Record News, was recently honored as a “Friend of Extension” at ceremonies held on Iowa State University campus in Ames. According to a press release, “Smith has promoted ISU Extension and Outreach for many years. His coverage of events and activities was featured weekly in the Ringgold county paper he owned for more than 30 years.
According to the Energy Information Administration’s projection in January 2014, the average retail price of regular grade gasoline for January-December 2014 is $3.46 per gallon.
Births: March 10, a daughter, Lydia, to Amber Kasha and Chad Kingery…March 15, a son, Jarek, to Lindsey Mitchell and Dallas Earley.
