For the second time in as many meets, Mount Ayr’s Jaylee Shaffer collected medalist honors at a meet.
This time, at the large MoHawk Invitational last Thursday where there were eight teams and 49 individual golfers. Shaffer won the meet with a low score of 76.
As a team, the Raiderettes picked up an impressive victory, beating the second-placed team, Ottumwa, by nine strokes.
The Raiderettes beat larger schools Ottumwa, Centerville, Davis County, Oskaloosa, and Chariton among others at the meet. Pleasantville and Moravia, who didn’t score as a team, were the only other small schools at the meet.
Mount Ayr has a light week of meet play this week, as they hosted Southwest Valley on Tuesday, April 23. Next up for Mount Ayr will be the 2024 Pride of Iowa Conference track and field meet on Wednesday, May 1 at Bedford.
Olivia Huntington placed 8th with a score of 104, having shaved four strokes off her first nine-hole score of 54. Kamryn Willis added another Mount Ayr top-20 finish by placing 17th with a score of 111 including a drop in score from 57 on the first nine to 54 on the second nine.
Other Mount Ayr scores were Izzy Gilbertson 112, and Alana Doolittle 117.

Raiderettes win home golf meet, Shaffer medalist
Led by meet medalist Jaylee Shaffer, the Mount Ayr girl’s golf team won their home triangular meet last week on Monday, April 15.
There, Shaffer scored a two-over par for the course with a score of 37 to lead Mount Ayr. The Raiderettes shot a team-low score of 195 points to beat Wayne and Melcher-Dallas.
Shaffer had a par on the first two holes and shot one-under par on hole three. She added par on hole four and shot one-over on hole five. Shaffer had par for holes six and seven and then shot one over par on the final two holes.
Other Mount Ayr scores were Kamryn Willis 51, Alana Doolittle 53, Olivia Huntington 54, and Izzy Gilbertson 65.
Peyton Rhoades from Wayne was the runner-up medalist with a score of 48 and Ashlyn Metz led Melcher-Dallas with a score of 71.
