Four events punch tickets to state for Raiderettes

The Mount Ayr girl’s track and field team will send four events to the 2024 state track and field meet this week in Des Moines. The Raiderettes ran a competitive meet with many POI schools in the 14-team field. The Raiderettes will send three relay events and one individual event.
Going for relays are the Raiderettes 4×400, 4×800, and distance medley relay teams.
Also qualifying individually was Aubree Shields in the high jump.
As a team, Mount Ayr nearly was the runner-up team in the team race.
The Wayne Falcons ran away with the team title, scoring 133 points. Nodaway Valley was the runner-up team with 118 points while Mount Ayr was right there, scoring 116 points for third place.
A fourth Pride of Iowa Conference team placed fourth at the meet with 87 points.
All four of the events qualifying for the 2024 state meet turned in their best performances this season to date. Aubree Shields, who qualified last year for state as a freshman, will get another shot at state after jumping a season-best 5-feet, 3 inches to win the high jump at the meet.
Three relays qualified for state and all three turned in a season best times. The Raiderettes 4×400-meter relay team of Anne Newton, Jaxy Knight, Ashlyn Murphy, and Aubree Shields won the event in a season-best time of 4:17.42
The Raiderettes 4×800-meter relay team of Anne Newton, Addison Doolittle, Tatum Friedrich, and Ashlyn Murphy placed second in a season-best time of 10:32.20. The relay had one of the top times in the state outside of automatic qualifying events to punch their ticket to state.
Mount Ayr’s last relay win was from their distance medley relay team. The team of Jaxy Knight, Aubree Shields, Ashlyn Murphy, and Anne Newton 4:32.66 won the event in a season-best time of 4:32.66,
In field events, Hayden Ruggles had two season-best throws to claim top-5 finishes in the shot put and discus. Ruggles placed third in the shot put with a throw of 33-feet, 1.5 inches, and placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 90-feet.
Other Raiderettes to claim top-10 finishes were Koda Henle with a season-best throw in the discus to place fifth in 80-07 and Dannie Stewart and MaKel Jones with a sixth and eighth finish in the long jump.
Two Mount Ayr events finished third.
Tatum Friedrich was third in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:06.18 and Keely Wasteney was fourth in a time of 1:07.47, both times were season-best times.
Breya Nickle collected two season-best performances, finishing 10th in the 100-meter hurdles and 14th in the 400-meter hurdles. Abby Eaton picked up a season-best time in the 100-meter dash and placed 10th in the event. Addison Doolittle placed third in the 1,500-meter run in a season-best time of 5:39.27.
Ava England also had a season-best time in the event and placed eighth. MaKel Jones, and Jaxy Knight each had top-5 finishes in the 400-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash respectively.
Other Raiderettes to claim season-best times and top-10 finishes were Kacie Larsen in the 800-meter run and Ivy Bice in the 3,000-meter run.
Other Raiderettes to finish with top-10 finishes were Abby Eaton in the 200, Tatum Friedrich in the 800, Ashlyn Byer in the 3,00-meter run, and Dannie Stewart in the 100-meter hurdles.
The Raiderettes also claimed top-5 finishes in three other relay events. The Raiderettes sprint medley relay team of Brittlyn Nickle, Anna Greenland, Kyleigh Conklin, and Keely Wasteney was third in 2:02.74. Mount Ayr placed third in the 4×200-meter relay with the team of Brittlyn Nickle, Abby Eaton, Kyleigh Conklin, and Jaxy Knight in 1:55.63. Mount Ayr also got a fourth-place finish from their 4X100-meter relay team of Brittlyn Nickle, Abby Eaton, Dannie Stewart, and Kyleigh Conklin in 55.46.
The state track and field meet begins Thursday, May 16, and runs through Saturday, May 18 in Des Moines at Drake Stadium. The Class 1A/4A portion of the meets is in the afternoon with field events starting at 11:30 and running events beginning at 2:40. Saturday will be the finals in all classes.
