A major disaster was averted by quick action of the Mount Ayr fire department at Dredge Feed in Mount Ayr Monday.
Royce Dredge was working to stretch the frame of a pickup truck so it could be used as a feed delivery truck when a spark from a metal saw set some gasoline that had been drained from the pickup tank on fire. Dredge moved the container toward the overhead door, which was closed and the area around the door caught fire before the door could be opened.
The fire then threatened a gasoline tank just outside the door of the building. Dredge worked on the fire with a garden hose until the Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department arrived after a call at 3:05 p.m. and soon had the blaze under control.
