The state track and field meet was held late last week in Des Moines and the Mount Ayr Raiderettes sent four events to the annual showcase of high school track athletes.
There, the Raiders got a runner-up finish from sophomore Aubree Shields to lead Mount Ayr.
The Raiderettes also competed in three relay events the 4×800-meter, the distance medley, and the 4×400-meter relay events.

Aubree Shields finished second in the Class 1A high jump competition at the Iowa State High School Track and Field Championships in Des Moines last week. Shields set a school record with her jump of five feet, five inches.
On Friday, Aubree Shields made history in the high jump in her Class 1A runner-up finish at the State Track Meet. Her jump of 5-5 broke a tie for the school record at 5-4 with Mount Ayr track and field legend Dawn (Huff) Elliott and Shields. Shields hit the 5-4 mark at last year’s state meet as a freshman.
Shields jumped out of the second flight in the event. Shields cleared the opening height at a state of 4-feet, 10 inches in her first jump. She also cleared the next two heights of 5-0 and 5-2 in her first attempt at the height. Shields was one of five of the 24 jumpers in 1A that did that.
Shields missed on her first jump at 5-4 but got it on her second try. She was one of three jumpers to get 5-feet, 5 inches.
Shields and third-place finisher Jaidyn Sellers from Panorama would bow out at their attempts at 5-6. Event champion Ema Roberts from HLV would clear 5-6 on one jump and 5-7 on three jumps. Roberts missed on all three jumps at 5-feet, 8.5 inches. Roberts won the event,
Shields was second and Sellers was third.

The Raiderettes began their state-run with their 4×800-meter relay team running on Thursday, May 16. The 4×8 team was made up of Anne Newton, Addison Doolittle, Tatum Friedrich, and Ashlyn Murphy. Alternates for the event were Ashlyn Byer, Kacie Larsen, and Ava England.
The team ran in the first heat of the event and would run to a 22nd place finish in 10:36.07.
The next day, besides Shields jumping in the high jump, Mount Ayr had their distance medley relay team and its 4×400-meter relay team running.
The team of Jaxy Knight, Aubree Shields, Ashlyn Murphy, and Anne Newton placed 18th in the 4×400 in a time of 4:29.60. That time is No. 6 all-time at Mount Ayr in the program.

Tatum Friedrich was on stand-by and ready to go if needed as Shields made her run in the high jump. As the high jump continued it was getting close to being bumped up against the 4×4, thus the backup plan. The long jump would end and Shields would run. In the prelims, Mount Ayr ran in heat one. In the event, the relay team placed 14th in a time of 4:17.65. The time nearly overtook the relay team’s season-best time, falling short by 0.2.
