One Hundred Years Ago

Tingley News: The hardware firm of Carter and Heyer has been dissolved, John L. Heyer retiring from the firm. Day Carter is now the sole proprietor of the store.
About noon Saturday the fine farm home of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Johnston, southeast of Tingley, caught fire and in a short time was completely destroyed.
It requires the services of experts constantly on duty at the department of chemistry at Iowa City to give careful analysis of the brain of animals sent to that institution to ascertain whether rabies are present. Maddogs have been numerous in recent months in many sections of the state.
For the third time the voters of Ringgold County at special election Monday refused to authorize the issuance of bonds for the purpose of building a courthouse. By a small margin of 79 votes the proposition was lost and the matter of selling bonds, letting contract and building is to be delayed until such a time as the voters more generally recognize the need and times are thought to be more propitious.
Marriage: Sayde Spencer became the bride of Paul Phillips.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

The Mount Ayr swimming beach, known as the old city reservoir, will be open to bathers on or about June 25 under supervision of Bill Eddy and Mike Trimble, who will serve as lifeguards.
Carl F. Petersen, Raymond Ferree, Bob Hudson, and Roy R. Swartz enjoyed a most interesting Memorial weekend, packed with speed, excitement, and new experiences.
Petersen at the controls of his Stinson Voyager and three passengers took off at Mt. Ayr airport at 7 a.m. Sunday and at 10 a.m. landed at Springfield, IL where they spent 2 hours visiting Lincoln’s tomb and other places of interest.
After lunch they were on their way to Bloomington, IN where they were met at the airport by Elbert Hudson, a brother of Bob.
The next morning they took off for Indianapolis, landed at Schenk airport, walked 2 1/2 miles to the speedway, where they saw Bill Holland establish a new record for the 500 mile course, averaging 121.377 mph.

Fifty Years Ago

Torrential rains, hail and high winds battered a narrow band in the west part of Ringgold County last Thursday, causing widespread damage to buildings and crops in the area.
The storm hit about 6:30 p.m. Center of the damaged area seemed to be northwest of Benton and southwest of Diagonal. Farmers in the area reported hail up to golf ball size pounded crop ground, destroying much corn, and riddling hay.
Milt Henderson of Mount Ayr, who retired from the Iowa State University Extension service, will become a lay minister for the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr.
Joe Warin, seven year old son of Mike and DeAnn Warin of Mount Ayr suffered a broken hip Thursday in a bicycle-car accident.
The Mount Ayr Jaycees today announced their sponsorship of the Barnes and Daily Circus to be held at the Ringgold County Fairgrounds on June 12.
Perfect weather brought a big crowd of racing fans to the Ringgold County Speedway Sunday night to view an exciting race.
An estimated 800 persons filled the stands, and there were a number of new cars in action during the evening.
Dennis Pearson took individual honors, capturing all three events in the modified six-cylinder classes.
Coach Gary Wimmer reports 52 boys attended a recent meeting for prospective football candidates. Named captains for next fall’s team are Allen Schafer and Brian Nieman, both seniors.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Three Czechs have been visiting their Bohemian relatives in Diagonal during May. They are third cousins of locals Junior Jezek, Norman Klejch, Louise Slavik Kessler, Marvin Sobotka, and Carol Sobotka.
Several Bohemian ancestors arrived in Ringgold County in 1866, after the settling of the Toman and Jezek families in the year 1857. Until about 1900 a number of Bohemian families came to the Diagonal area. They survived due to their knowledge of how to work the soil to prosper in this new land, since the terrain was similar to that in their homeland.
Nolan Howie qualified for the state golf tournament as an individual after shooting the second best individual total at the Class 2A district golf tournament held at Colfax Friday.
Four lead area classes~Mount Ayr Community high school valedictorian is Rachel Derscheid of Ellston and the salutatorian is Debbie Stephens of Mount Ayr. Diagonal’s valedictorian is Bobbi Schlapia and salutatorian is Adam Stephens.

Ten Years Ago

The MACH Raider track team secured their first state title in history Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium in a performance that can be called both dominating and historic.
Noah Larsen cruised to a victory in the 1600 meter run, he also won the 3200 meter run, followed by the 4×800 meter relay team of Erik Freed, Trevor Anderson, Kyle Dolecheck and Noah Larsen.
The distance medley team of Grant Staats, Lincoln Martin, Jacob Sobotka, and Erik Freed also took first. Winning first and second in the 800 meter run was Kyle Dolecheck and Noah Larsen.
William J. Armstrong, funeral director and owner of Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Clearfield and Diagonal, was installed as District 4 Governor of Iowa Funeral Directors Association during the 134th annual convention held May 13-15 at the Iowa State Center and Gateway Hotel in Ames.
