Helen Jeter

Helen Jeter
Helen was born January 18, 1925, at her parent’s home in Kellerton, Iowa to Wilber (Doc) and Donna (Swigart) Greimann. Helen passed away September 2, 2024, at the age of 99 after spending the last 7 years at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Strong in her faith she will be joining her husband, Eldon; parents Doc and Donna; and siblings GW, Clara Ruth, and Eva Jean; grandson Damon; and lifelong friend Wanda in their flight with the angels.
Helen attended a single-room country school for the first years of her life, often sharing a horseback ride to and from the school with one or more of her siblings. Helen later graduated from Kellerton High School on May 14, 1942. On March 9, 1948, Helen married her husband of 46 years, Eldon, and shortly thereafter bought a home in Clearfield, Iowa where they lived and retired. Together they raised and supported a son Dale and a daughter Diane who over time grew into an extended family with four grandkids, fourteen great-grandkids, and eight great-great-grandkids. Holidays were special for Helen as she either held or attended family holiday celebrations. To her final day Helen’s family was her life.
Helen was an accomplished seamstress during her life sewing many clothes for family members. When Dale and Diane entered school Helen went to work for a few years at the Clearfield School in the lunchroom. Clearfield used to have a skating rink concrete slab where kids skated to music during the summer. Across the street was a dairy sweet open during the summer where Helen would occasionally work. While there she came up with a peanut butter ice cream shake that generated a following.
Helen and daughter Diane were Methodist Church members and sang together in the choir. Helen and Eldon enjoyed going to the kid’s school and sporting events. Helen taught Sunday School and was a Cub Scout den mother. Later in life she enjoyed watching sports, especially rodeos on TV.
Helen went to town to buy some groceries one day August 1967 and was ask by the local postmaster if she would like to work for the US Post Office in Clearfield. She said yes and completed her 20-year postal service as the Clearfield Iowa Postmaster when she retired on January 30, 1987.
Helen is a lifetime member of the Postal Workers Union, the United Postmasters and Managers of America, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the VFW. With her husband, two brothers, and numerous family members and in-laws being veterans, Helen was a strong supporter of veteran organizations and causes.
Helen was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, three siblings, husband, a grandson, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and in-laws.
Surviving family members are her youngest brother Lee (partner Diane); son Dale (wife Linda); daughter Diane (husband Dan); grandkids Darren, Matthew, and Justin; along with great-grandkids; great-great-grandkids; nieces; nephews; and extended family members.
In lieu of flowers the family encourages you to donate to your local food pantry to help those going through a tough period in time.

Rest in Peace Aunt Helen. The many celebrations with family left me with a lifetime of great memories. My favorite was when you and Grandma Wanda drove the car right up to the fence at SWCC to watch me coach a softball game in the snow. My team would win their first game of the year, and we celebrated with chocolate covered ritz crackers and peanut butter, and a pot of beef noodles for the road. The golden girls beware, Helen and Wanda were on a tear. Fear not my fabled friends for they will be with us until the end. And though we ponder life’s rendition, death is not the end but merely a transition. See you on the other side Aunt Helen. Im sure Gma Wanda will have the goodies ready and the card game hoppin.
