The Mount Ayr volleyball team is on a roll, having won five of seven matches last week and evening their overall record to 9-9. The Raiderettes won two POI matches, a non-conference match at Bedford, and two of four matches they played at their home volleyball tournament this past weekend.
Mount Ayr began the week with a three-set win over Wayne and a two-set sweep over Central Decatur in a POI meet at home. The Raiderettes won the first set 25-21 to take a 1-0 match lead over the Falcons. Wayne tied the match at 1-1 with a second-set win, 26-24. The third set saw Mount Ayr claim the match, winning 15-13.
Mount Ayr had 63 attacks in the match with 24 kills. Aubree Shields led with 28 attacks and 9 kills. Ashlyn Murphy added 10 attacks and 4 kills.
Dannie Stewart had 11 assists and Jaylee Shaffer had 9. Mount Ayr had 48 digs in the match led by Shields with 10, Breya Nickle with 9, and Stewart with 8.
Mount Ayr served 60-for-63 with 7 aces. Dannie Stewart led, going 15-for-16 with three aces. Aubree Shields also had three aces in the match.
Mount Ayr beat Central Decatur in two sets, 25-16 and 25-17. The win was the third straight for the Raiderettes in a row.
Mount Ayr had 39 attacks in the match with 18 kills. Aubree Shields had 12 attacks and 5 kills. Ashlyn Murphy also had 5 kills in the match.
The Raiderettes had 22 digs in the match led by Jaxy Knight with 8. The Raiderettes served 42-for-48 with six aces in the match. Shields led, going 9-for-11 with a pair of ace serves.
Two nights later, last Thursday, the Raiderettes faced Bedford in a non-conference match.
This year is the first for Bedford in the Corner Conference after many years as a member of the Pride of Iowa Conference. It was also the second time in less than a week that the Raiderettes have played Bedford.
The two teams met at the Shenandoah tournament on Saturday, September 14. There, the Raiderettes beat Bedford 2-0 (21-19 and 21-16). Last week, the Raiderettes also beat Bedford, but this match was closer, going three sets. Mount Ayr would win the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-17 to take a commanding 2-0 match lead. Bedford rallied, winning the third set 25-23 and then tying the match by winning the fourth set 25-21 at 2-2. In the third and deciding set, Mount Ayr beat the Bulldogs 15-10. The match was held at Bedford.
Mount Ayr had 143 attacks in the match with 49 kills. Aubree Shilds led with 53 attacks and 25 kills in the match. Breya Nickle had 32 attacks and 11 kills. Jaylee Shaffer had 23 assists and Dannie Stewart 20 assists.
Defensively, Mount Ayr had 103 digs led by Shaffer and Jaxy Knight with 23 and 22. Mount Ayr served 98-for-109 with 14 aces. Stewart led, going 22-for-25 with an ace.
Raiderettes split four matches at home tournament
The Mount Ayr Raiderette volleyball team went 2-2 in four matches at their home tournament last Saturday. The wins set the Raiderettes record at 9-9 this season.
Mount Ayr played Tuesday, September 24th at Martensdale-St. Mary’s against the Blue Devils and Lenox. This weekend, the Raiderettes played at the Bedford Lady Bulldog Tournament. Next Tuesday, the Raiderettes are back in POI action when they travel to Nodaway Valley.
Mount Ayr beat Clarke 2-1 and Interstate-35 2-0. Mount Ayr lost to East Mills and Lamoni by 2-0 scores.
Against Lamoni, Mount Ayr lost by set scores of 21-19 and 21-18.
Against East Mills, Mount Ayr lost by set scores of 25-21 and 25-18. Mount Ayr beat Clarke in three sets. Clarke won the first set 21-18 to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Ayr tied the match at 1-1 with a 21-9 second set win. The Raiderettes claimed the match, winning the deciding third set 15-7.
Mount Ayr beat Interstate-35 in two sets, 21-10 and 21-17.
