While youth today are facing unique challenges, 4-H is helping young people find their spark, build real world skills and become resilient, adaptable, lifelong learners. National 4-H Week, observed October 7-12, recognizes America’s largest youth development organization.
Supporting nearly six million youth across the United States, the organization focuses on preparing youth to face an unknown future with confidence, giving them the ability to navigate and adapt to emerging world needs.
Last year, Ringgold County 4-H programing was coordinated by 26 adult volunteers who led 109 youth members in becoming resilient, innovative, and forward-thinking members of society.
The new 4-H year began September 1, and annual enrollment is now underway. While enrollment can happen anytime throughout the year, funds are currently available to help offset member fees for those who enroll prior to December 1.
All 4th-12th grade students who enroll before December 1 can save $35 on their annual membership dues.
Currently, 4-H membership will only be $10 per member with NEW Cooperative and Ringgold County Extension covering the remainder of the $45 annual membership dues.
Clover Kid members (K-3rd) pay the $5 fee no matter when they enroll/re-enroll.
Dues are used by Iowa 4-H to cover costs associated with 4-H Online, volunteer trainings, curriculum development, marketing, state staff and other expenses.
The Junior Farmers 4-H club is getting a jump start on the year by inviting all dog owners to bring their pups to Liberty Lake on Saturday, October 26 from 2-3:30 p.m. for a Halloween Hound Hike.
The Twin River Tornadoes and other local 4-H clubs are joining them in planning fun activities for you and your dog(s) to enjoy around the lake.
Dressing your dog up is encouraged as prizes will be awarded for best costume. Dogs must be leashed at all times and owners must have proof of rabies vaccination upon request.
Free face painting is also being offered by Crisis Intervention and Advocacy team members.
While there is no charge for dogs, a $1 entrance fee will be collected from all humans, with funds used for Ringgold County Fairground improvement projects.
The event is a great opportunity to explore what 4-H membership is all about, and talk with club leaders about monthly club activities. Ringgold County 4-H clubs are currently accepting new members who would like to be involved in year-round leadership building events.
If this will be your first year, contact the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach office in Mount Ayr for more information by calling (641) 464-3333 or email xRinggold@iastate.edu
