Raiders, Raiderettes starting season strong
Both Mount Ayr basketball teams picked up victories to end the week last week over Pride of Iowa Conference rival Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
The Raider boys beat MTSM 48-27 while the Mount Ayr girls beat the Blue Devils by ten points, 49-39.
In the boy’s game, the Raiders jumped out to an 11-2 lead after the first quarter and took a 22-14 lead to halftime. A 14-9 run in the third quarter helped Mount Ayr take control of the game with a 36-23 lead going to the final quarter. Mount Ayr outscored MTSM 12-4 in the final quarter.

Mount Ayr had three players reach double figures in the game. Forwards Tyler Martin and Tate Dugan led the Raiders in scoring with 14 points each. Dugan grabbed 8 rebounds and Martin had 6 rebounds. Jackson Ruggles chipped in 13 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. Colton Wight led Martensdale-St. Mary’s in scoring with 8 points and 6 rebounds.
The Raiders improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the POI with the win. The Raiders won their fourth straight games over the Blue Devils.
In the girl’s game, the Raiderettes beat their second POI foe in a row with a 10-point, 49-39 win over Martensdale-St. Mary’s. The Raiderettes have now beaten both of the POI schools, Nodaway Valley the other, that have won the last four POI titles, in the first week of the season. The Raiderettes trailed 13-9 after the first quarter, but rallied to take a one-point, 19-18 lead at halftime. The Raiderettes clung to a 31-29 lead after three quarters. Mount Ayr would use an 18-11 run in the final quarter to secure the win.

Three Raiderettes scored in double figures. Izzy Gilbertson led with 18 points and 9 rebounds while both Breya Nickle and Dannie Stewart each had 12 points. Nickle tied Gilbertson for the lead in rebounds with 9.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s was led by 14 points from Rylie Fugate and eight points from Carley Franey and Kathryn Ballard.
Mount Ayr improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the POI. The Raiderettes moved up one spot in the latest Class 1A IGHSAU poll to No. 4. The Raiderettes win over MTSM snapped a three-game losing streak to the Blue Devils.
