Mount Ayr by the numbers
The changing of the new year marked the halfway point between the most recent U.S. Census in 2020 and the next one in 2030. However, the Census Bureau periodically updates its estimates, and below are the latest numbers pertaining to the demographic statistics for Mount Ayr.
Residents
Mount Ayr has a population of 1,626 within its 2.7 square mile area.
The median age of Mount Ayr residents is 40.6. (A median average means one-half of the population is older and one-half is younger than the median age.) Twenty-nine percent of the population is age 19 or younger while 26 percent are between the ages of 50-69. The smallest percentage of seven percent is 80 years or older.
The gender is nearly evenly split, with females outnumbering males 51 percent to 49 percent. Fifty-one percent of residents aged 15 or over are unmarried.
Ninety-two percent of the population is white while five percent identifies as Hispanic.
Veterans make up seven percent of the population, with the most having served in the Vietnam era.
Economics
Per capita income is estimated at $29,300 which is about 90 percent of the average in Ringgold County and three-quarters the average in Iowa. The median household income is estimated at $61,458 which is 90 percent of both the Ringgold County and Iowa averages. Forty-six percent claim household income under $50,000 while 22 percent report household income between $100,000 to $200,000.
The percentage of the Mount Ayr population who live below the poverty line is 7.4, compared to 8.3 percent in Ringgold County and 11.1 percent in Iowa. Six percent of children under age 18 and nine percent of seniors over age 65 live below the poverty line.
Housing
Mount Ayr is home to 732 households with an average of 2.4 persons per household. Sixty-four percent of households are characterized as married couples.

A high school diploma was the highest educational attainment for 40 percent of Mount Ayr residents while six percent did not finish high school. Thirty percent report some college credit, another 16 percent attained a Bachelor’s degree, and eight percent claim post-graduate work.
