At the halfway point in the current fiscal year, local governments are already preparing to put pencils to paper to formulate their budgets for Fiscal Year 2026, which begins July 1.
County and city governments are having to wrestle with legislation that came out of the Iowa legislature last session that puts certain caps on increases in property taxes and provides other mandates pertaining to budgeting. The impact of that legislation will come into focus as the budget process progresses into the spring.
The charts below provide a comparison of the tax levy rates among area counties, cities, and school districts in the current fiscal year.
