A promising start at SE Warren turning into the Raiders first Pride of Iowa Conference loss last Thursday in a game between two of the top POI leaders.
The Raiders and Warhawks played for the first time this season, making up a postponed weather game from December. The final, 61-40.
“SE Warren is good. They have all the pieces and they are tough,” said Mount Ayr head coach Brett Ruggles.
“The value of our league is that there are a lot of teams that can beat a lot of teams. We always have teams get to the second and third rounds. Tuesday we are in Corning and they are tough. Winning on the road is not easy, but we get them at our place still and we will see what happens,” he said.
The two teams are now tied atop the POI with one conference loss each. The two teams will play in Mount Ayr before the end of the month.
Each team scored 18 first quarter points and it seemed like the making of an instant classic.
The offenses slowed in the second quarter with Mount Ayr taking a two-point, 27-25 halftime lead. Out of the halftime break, the Warhawks used a 19-9 run to take an 8-point lead, 44-36 to the final quarter. In the final quarter things went South for the Raiders as SE Warren used a 17-4 run to seal the win.
Mount Ayr got 14 points from Jackson Ruggles and 10 from Tyler Martin in the loss. The Raiders made five three pointers in the game.
The WarHawks had 7 made three pointers and made 12-of-19 free throws. The Raiders shot only 12 free throws in the game, making five.
The Raiders won their second game in a row on Tuesday, January 14 when they beat Nodaway Valley 72-25.
The Raiders defense allowed only one of the quarters by the Wolverines to have 10 or more points scored. Mount Ayr beat Nodaway Valley 62-37 back in early December in Greenfield.
The Raiders led 20-6 after the first quarter and used an 18-5 run in the second quarter to take a commanding 38-11 halftime lead. The Raiders would nearly match their first half point output, scoring 34 points.
The Raiders had four players reach double figures led by Jackson Ruggles with 15 points, 7 steals, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Tyler Martin scored 13 points and Tate Dugan had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Adler Reed scored 10 points and had 5 assists and 4 steals off the bench.
The Raiders began the week at home against Central Decatur on Monday, January 13. Mount Ayr took a 10-point, 18-8 lead after the first quarter, but led by eight points, 29-21 at halftime after the Cardinals outscored Mount Ayr 13-11 in the second quarter.
After halftime, the Raiders used a 16-7 run to run their lead to double figures going to the fourth quarter and never were challenged after that.
Mount Ayr was led by a pair of players in double digits with Tate Dugan leading with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Tyler Martin added 13 points. Jackson Ruggles chipped in 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists. Trevin Victor had 7 assists in the game.
The Raiders defense held down Cardinal leading scorer Nash Dykes to ten points under his season average of 17.3 points a game and second leading scorer Paxon Applegate to half of his season average of 11.8 points. With Dykes only managing 7 points and Applegate 6 points, the Cardinals were led by Asher Norman with 12 points and 4 rebounds.
The Cardinals came into the game having lost three straight games.
