The annual showcase of wrestling in Southwest Iowa known as the John J Harris Invitational, was held last Friday and Saturday in Corning. The Mount Ayr Raiders were one of 26 scoring teams at the event and one of six Pride of Iowa Conference teams at the event.
The Raiders placed 15th with 54.5 team points and had one champion. The Raiders had eleven wrestlers at the meet.
Mount Ayr’s Brock Shaha won the 120-pound weight class and improved to 30-2.
Shaha had two byes in the first two rounds and began his run in the quarterfinals. There, Shaha would pin Camden Whipp from Clarinda in 1:18 to advance to the semifinals. In the semi’s, Shaha would win a close 1-0 decision over Centerville’s Matt Genobana after scoring an escape.
In the finals, Shaha pinned Max Millage from Earlham in 1:05.
In the semifinal and finals wins, Shaha defeated two wrestlers who each had at least 30 wins.
Two other Raiders placed at the meet with Bracken Collier placing fifth at 175 and Bryson Martin placed sixth at 126.
Collier wrestled in six matches and improved to 19-13 after placing fifth at 175. Collier was 4-2 in six matches. He won a 12-4 major decision over Bowen Tadlock from Winterset in the 5th place match. Collier also had decision wins 7-0 over Red Oak’s Tyler Schofield and an 11-6 decision win over Jaxsen Simmert from Shenandoah. His other win was a pin in 2:54 over Colby Holbrook from Wayne.
Martin wrestled in six matches and improved to 28-11, going 3-3 at the tournament and placed sixth at 126. Martin had two pins and a decision win. Martin pinned Clarinda’s Hayden Hash in 1:07 in the second round. Martin won an 11-10 decision over Grant Oesch from Central Decatur in the consolation round. Martin also won by fall in 4:46 over Levi Fitzgerald from Lenox.
The Raiders had eight wrestlers at the meet that did not place. At the meet but not placing were Jonathan Morales at 285, Cordell Clemens at 190, Austin Briner at 157, Tegan Hill at 150, Nathan Mederos at 144, Tate Schaefer at 138, Nathan Roemer at 132, and Weston Adams at 106. The Raiders were back on the mat Monday night against West Central Valley and Lenox in a dual meet. After that, the Raiders will be at the East Union Duals on February 8.
