The Mount Ayr Raiders made the trip across the Iowa-Missouri border last Saturday to compete at the Quad State wrestling classic.
The Raiders were one of 14 scoring and 16 total teams at the meet from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. Mount Ayr placed fourth with 135.5 points led by an individual title for Brock Shaha. Mount Ayr tied for the second most wrestlers at the meet with 11. Of the 11 there, six were place winners.
Brock Shaha improved to 36-2 and had two wins at the tournament in winning the 120-pound weight class. Shaha pinned Dawson Pelletier from South Harrison in 2:59 in the semifinals. In the finals, Shaha pinned Tyrre Broom from Winnetonka in 3:08 to win the weight class.
There was another Raider to reach the finals. Bracken Collier was the runner-up at the 175-pound weight class. Collier improved to 24-14 with a pair of wins in three matches. Collier pinned Sutter Akins from South Harrison in the quarterfinals and pinned Braxton Melton-Davis from Tarkio in 3:44 in the semifinals to reach the finals. In the finals, he lost to McKyver Hagarty from Waverly-Shell Rock.
Four Raiders wrestled for third place, with two placing third and two placing fourth. Weston Adams placed third at 106 and improved to 25-18 after going 3-1 at the tournament. Weston had a tech fall to reach the semifinals. He lost in the semifinals but advanced to the third-place match with a 20-3 tech fall win in the consolation semis. In the third place match, Weston collected his third tech fall win, a 16-1 win in 4:15 over Braxton Pyle from Sabetha High School. Bryson Martin placed third at 126 and improved to 34-12 after going 3-1. Martin won by pin in 40 seconds in the quarterfinals but was pinned in the semifinals. Martin pinned his consolation foe to reach the third-place match. In the third-place match, Martin pinned Lester Brown III in 1:53 to finish third.
Nathan Roemer placed fourth at 138 and improved to 22-21 with two wins in four matches. Roemer won two matches by pin, one in 3:55 and another in 2:59. Nathan Mederos placed fourth at 144 and improved to 12-23 with two wins in four matches. Mederos won a 19-18 decision and another match by disqualification.
Other Raiders at the meet, but who did not place were Tate Schaefer at 132, Tegan Hill at 150, Austin Briner at 157, Cordell Clemens at 190, and Jonathan Morales at 285.
The Raiders will be back in action on February 6 at the Mount Ayr Duals and on Saturday at the East Union Duals.
