The Mount Ayr Raider wrestling team had their last meet before this week’s state qualifying meet last Saturday at East Union High School. The Raiders were in six duals and won one of those, a 36-30 win over Bedford.
The Raiders also wrestled Central Decatur, East Union, Chariton, Lenox, and SE Warren/Melcher-Dallas.
Mount Ayr will wrestle at the District 8 state qualifying meet in Oakland on Saturday. The district tournament begins at 10 a.m. with a ticket cost of $8 via HomeTown Ticketing. The top-2 place winners in each weight class advance to the 2025 IAHSAA State traditional Tournament next week in Des Moines.
The Raiders will be one of five Pride of Iowa Conference teams at the meet. Joining the Raiders will be Bedford, East Union, Essex, Lenox, Nodaway Valley, Riverside, Shenandoah, SW Iowa, Southwest Valley, and Treynor.
The Raider’s win came against former POI foe Bedford.
The Bulldogs are in their first school year in the Corner Conference. Three weights were open in the dual at 113, 120, and 190. Mount Ayr won six matches, five by pin. Weston Adams won by pin at 106 in 1:14, Brock Shaha won by pin at 126 in 1:31, Bryson Martin won by forfeit at 132. Nathan Roemer won by pin in 3:40 at 138 while Bracken Collier won by pin at 175 in 34 seconds and Cordell Clemens won by pin at 215 in 1:25.
In their first match, the Raiders fell to Central Decatur 38-34. The Raiders got forfeit wins from Weston Adams at 106, Nathan Roemer at 132, and Cordell Clemens at 215. Two Raiders won by pin with Brock Shaha winning in 1:22 at 120 and Bracken Collier winning in 57 seconds at 190. The other win came from a major decision win by Bryson Martin at 126.
Against East Union, Mount Ayr got all of their wins in a 40-30 loss by forfeit. Winning matches were Brock Shaha at 120, Bryson Martin at 132, Bracken Collier at 190, Cordell Clemens at 215, and Jonathan Morales at 285.
The Raiders lost to Chariton by criteria after tying the Chargers at 42. The criteria went to who had the most forfeits in the match with Chariton having 4 to the Raiders 1. Weston Adams, Shaha, Martin, Roemer, Tegan Hill, Collier, and Clemens all won matches in the dual.
The Raiders fell to Lenox 45-30. Brock Shaha won by pin in 1:38 at 120 and Bryson Martin won by pin at 126 in 2:45. The other Raider wins came from Cordell Clemens at 215, Jonathan Morales at 285, and Weston Adams at 106 each by forfeit.
The last dual saw SE Warren/Melcher-Dallas beat Mount Ayr, 44-28. The Warhawks won the first seven weight classes in the dual. Morales got the first win, a forfeit, at 285. Adams would win a 22-13 major decision over Trace Mann at 106 while the last three weights were won by pins from Shaha at 120, Martin at 126, and Roemer at 132, all in the first period of their matches.
