The Mount Ayr boy’s basketball team advanced along the tournament trail Monday night, beating rival Lenox 64-50 at home in the quarterfinal round of the Class 1A district 7 tournament.
The Raiders improved to 19-3 and sit on the cusp of a 20-win season for just the fifth time since at least 2007 and first time in three years. The win was the fourth in a row for the Raiders.
Mount Ayr will now host East Mills on Wednesday, February 20. East Mills will bring a 61-25 win over Griswold to town in their district quarterfinal win Monday and a record of 18-5. The winner of that game will play the winner of 1A No. 7 Coon Rapids-Bayard, an 81-29 winner over Nodaway Valley Monday, and Stanton (11-11) in the District Final game on Tuesday, February 25.
Mount Ayr led by eight points after the first quarter 19-11 and used an 18-6 second quarter run to lead at halftime, 37-17. The Tigers trimmed three points off the Raider lead in each of the two second half quarters, but the Raiders were in no danger of giving up the lead.
The Raiders beat Lenox both times during the regular season. Mount Ayr beat Lenox 57-42 at home on January 7 and at Lenox, 61-45 on January 28.
Three Raiders scored in double figures in the game led by Jackson Ruggles with 25 points. Tyler Martin and Tate Dugan scored 18 and 10 points. Dugan had a double-double, adding a team high 10 rebounds while Trevin Victor had a team high 5 steals.
The opposite side of the Raiders bracket, district 14, has 1A No. 9 Woodbine (20-2) against SW Valley (14-7) and Bedford (21-1) against Sidney (16-6) in the semifinals of that district.
