Raiders fall to Coon Rapids-Bayard, 67-41
For the seventh time under Raider head coach Bret Ruggles, a Mount Ayr team played for a district title.
Coming into the latest District Final game in Ruggles 18th season, the Raiders were 3-3. Now 3-4, as the Raiders couldn’t overcome 6th ranked Coon Rapids-Bayard, 67-41 at West Central Valley High School.
The Crusaders opened up a close game in the second and third quarters where they outscored Mount Ayr 41-10 to take control of the basketball game.
The Raiders’ fine season ends at 20-4, the program’s fourth season with at least 20 wins since the 2011-12 season. It marks the eighth straight winning season for the Raiders as well.
“I thought that they (Coon Rapids) forced us to get out of our defensive game plan and that was too much to overcome in those middle two quarters,” said Raider coach Bret Ruggles.
“We have had trouble with athletic forwards this season. We had trouble with Petermann from Bedford, Seuferer from SE Warren and now Cal Heydon,” he said.
Cal Heydon had a night pouring in a double-double, with 21 points and 20 rebounds.
The Raiders were only down four points after the first quarter, 15-11 against the state-ranked team. The Crusaders used an 18-5 run in the second quarter to open up the game and take a halftime lead of 33-16.
The Crusaders opened the second half on a big run, part of a 23-5 third quarter run to take a 56-21 lead to the final quarter. The 35-point mercy running clock rule was activated in the second half.
Mount Ayr scored their most offensive points in the final quarter when they outscored Coon Rapids-Bayard 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

Hayes Stogdill scored 6 points, had 3 steals, and 2 assists off the bench. Tate Dugan had 5 rebounds to go with 5 points and 2 assists. The Raiders made four three pointers and shot 33 percent from the floor in the game.
Four of the five Crusader starters reached double figures in the game. Joining Cal Heydon were Caden Oswald, who added 18 points and 9 assists. The Crusaders shot 47-percent from the floor in the game and made six three pointers.
