New Judge Lewis Pool finally opens
After 18 tumultuous years of planning to replace the original pool in Mount Ayr, a ribbon cutting and open house was held at the new pool on Friday, May 30.
Members of the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce, The City of Mount Ayr, and the aquatic center committee gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 p.m.
Opening remarks were made by City Administrator Brent Wise and Lywanda Case, one of the original aquatic center committee members.
Shortly after, Layton Greenman took the first dive in the new pool, a privilege her family claimed during a fundraising benefit for the project.
An open house was then held from 5-7 p.m., with hot dogs, chips and water provided courtesy of Glendenning Motor Company.
Seasonal passes were also sold during the event for eager swimmers to enjoy the Judge Lewis pool all summer.
Individual season passes cost $80, while family season passes are $160. A babysitter or nanny can be added on to a family pass for $25.
Occasional swimmers can enter the pool for $5 daily or a reduced rate of $3 will allow evening swims.
The new pool officially opened to the public on Saturday, May 31.
A leaky water line going to one of the features initially delayed opening day by a week.
On Friday, May 23, the City of Mount Ayr announced that repairs had been completed, and a small area of the pool floor near one of the water features had been re-poured.
Ironically, the wait allowed time for seasonal temperatures to catch up with Mount Ayr’s progress.
Now open daily, pool hours are noon to 8 p.m., with adult swim hours designated between 5-6 p.m.
Pool parties can also be scheduled in advance, at a cost of $100 per hour.
Swimming lessons are being held June 9-13 or July 21-25, between 11 a.m. to noon or 5-6 p.m. The $10 registration fee can be paid at City Hall, and kids must have completed Kindergarten to be eligible for group lessons.
