It was an interesting week for the Mount Ayr softball team as a promising week of games turned into just two.
The Raiderettes had three games on the schedule with only two being played. Add in a scheduled game at home against SW Valley that was canceled before the season started because the Timberwolves are not fielding a team, meant two games lost.
The Raiderettes game at Lenox scheduled for June 26 was rained out, and as of presstime, has not been rescheduled.
Mount Ayr beat Bedford on June 25 on the road, and lost at home later in the week to Martensdale-St. Mary’s, 10-0 in four innings. The Raiderettes play at top ranked Class 1A Wayne on July 1 in their last regularly scheduled game.
Mount Ayr begins the Class 1A regional tournament on Monday, July 7 when they host Essex.
On Wednesday, June 25 the Raiderettes traveled to Bedford for a non-conference game.
Mount Ayr broke a scoreless tie game with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Two more runs came in for Mount Ayr in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Bedford scored the first of two runs in the game in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Mount Ayr lead to 4-1.
Mount Ayr got that run back in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Raiderettes put the game away in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs to take a 7-1 lead. The win put Mount Ayr’s record of 8-7.
Mount Ayr had six hits in the game with two players having multi-hit games. Emma Reynolds and Adalynn Dredge each were 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dannie Stewart, Breya Nickle had the other hits. Mount Ayr had six walks in the game with Tatum Friedrich had two while Reynolds, Keely Wasteney, Stewart, and Barnes all had walks. Kensie Barnes was the winning pitcher after a complete game over seven innings.
Barnes struck out nine, walked two and scattered four hits. She gave up two runs and faced 29 batters. Bedford junior Macy Musich took the loss and also worked all seven innings. Musich struck out three, walked six and gave up seven runs. Musich led Bedford at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a run scored.
The second game of the week was a home contest on June 27, when Martensdale-St. Mary’s was in town. The Blue Devils tasted defeat at home the last time the two teams met back on June 10, 4-3. This time, the result would be different as the Blue Devils won 10-0 in four innings.
MTSM scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning to lead 1-0. Neither team scored in the second inning. The Blue Devils took control of the game in the top of the third inning with nine runs to take a 10-0 lead.
Keely Wasteney took the loss in the pitching circle after starting the game and working two and two-thirds innings. She gave up ten runs on ten hits and walked two batters. She faced 21 batters in the game. Kensie Barnes pitched the final inning and a third. Barnes did not give up a run on one hit. Mount Ayr had three hits in the game. They came from Emma Reynolds, Wasteney, and Barnes had the hits. Reynolds, MaKel Jones, and Dannie Stewart each reached base via walks.
Maclaine German was the winning pitcher after working four innings, striking out five and walking three batters. MTSM had five players with multi hit games. They were Ellie Baker, Karson Oberender, Shelby Woods, Abby Hughes, and Emily Hughes. Abby Hughes had a home run and 3 RBI’s while Woods and Oberender each drove in a pair of runs.
