Beat state-ranked team 5-2 heading into home stretch of season
The Mount Ayr baseball team goes into the last week of the season on a two-game winning streak with one of those games an upset of state ranked Martensdale-St. Mary’s at home.
The Raiders lost at Bedford 6-5 on June 25 and beat No. 7 MTSM at home, 5-2 two nights later on June 27.
The Raiders began the week with a home win over SW Valley to capture their 10th Pride of Iowa Conference win in a 11-5 victory. The Raiders will play a pair of road POI games and will play their Class 1A postseason opener Saturday in Bedford. The Raiders will play at Wayne on July 1 and at Lenox two days later on Thursday. The Raiders play Sidney on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Bedford.
Weather postponed the regularly scheduled game in Lenox on June 26, thus the July 3 make-up game.
The Raiders scored first with a pair of runs at Bedford surprising the Bulldogs and starter Cal Peterman.
Mount Ayr got a one-out RBI single by Rowan Sackett and a bases loaded, two-out run on a wild pitch to get their 2-0 lead. That lead held for a bit, until the Bulldogs scored a run in the third to set the score at 2-1 Raiders. Mount Ayr got that run back in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Trevin Victor to get the score to 3-1. Bedford responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to get the score to 3-2. Mount Ayr would have a chance to respond in the top of the fifth, and they did.
Mount Ayr got two big runs with two outs in the inning on a Drew Graham single to give Mount Ayr their biggest lead at 5-2. Unfortunately for the Raiders, like two times before in the game, Bedford answered, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Neither team would score again over the next two innings as the Bulldogs escaped with the win.
Mount Ayr had ten hits in the game with three players with two hits. Adler Reed was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Jaxsen Walter batted 2-for-3 with a run scored. Trevin Victor also was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Other hits were from Rowan Sackett, Tate Dugan, Avery Wolfe, and Drew Graham. Graham had a pair of RBI’s. Sackett and Graham each reached base via walks.
Drew Graham took the loss after working four and a third innings. He struck out three and walked two. Tate Dugan pitched an inning and two-thirds in relief and did not allow a run or hit.
Bedford had six hits led by Tim Rogers who was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Quentin Dalton and John Deemer each had 2 RBI’s. Bedford used three pitchers in the game. Brody King was the winning pitcher after five innings of work. Cal Peterman and Marcus Knightton also pitched in the game.
Mount Ayr lost 13-3 to MTSM back on June 10 on the road. This time was different with a 5-2 win, upsetting the state ranked Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils wasted little time in scoring, putting up what would come to be their only runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Mount Ayr would outscore the Blue Devils with five runs on five hits. The Raiders answered the two runs in the first with one in the bottom of the first. Mount Ayr tied the game with a run in the third inning and took the lead for good with a run in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Mount Ayr put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-2. Tyler Still and Drew Graham led off the fifth with walks. Trevin Victor then bunted, but a series of errors allowed both Still and Graham to score and get Victor to third. MTSM would settle down and get out of the inning, but the damage was already done.
Mount Ayr had five hits in the game by five different players. Adler Reed, Rowan Sackett, Jaxsen Walter, Tate Dugan, and Trevin Victor all had hits. Sackett and Walter each had RBI’s. Adler Reed had three of the Raiders seven stolen bases as a team. Sackett had two steals while Hayes Stogdill and Avery Wolfe each had a stolen base. Mount Ayr was issued nine walks in the game with Tyelr Still, Drew Graham and Rowan Sackett each getting two walks each.
Jaxsen Walter was the winning pitcher after working six innings. Walter struck out six and walked two batters. He gave up two runs on six hits and faced 26 batters. Trevin Victor pitched one-inning, striking out two and walking one. Trey Wight took the loss after going four innings. He struck out nine, walked four and gave up three runs on five. Cale Morrow pitched two innings in relief and gave up two runs and struck out three. The Blue Devils had eight hits led by Taylon Squire and Trey Wight with two hits each. Wight had a home run and 2 RBI’s.
The Raiders earned the sweep over SW Valley with an 11-5 win Monday, June 30 at home. The Raiders beat the Timberwolves 12-6 in Corning back on June 12.
Mount Ayr was in command in the game, scoring nine of their 11 runs in the game in the first three innings. Mount Ayr led 3-0 after the first inning and 5-1 after the second inning. After four run innings in the bottom of the third gave SW Valley a 9-2 lead. Though SW Valley outscored Mount Ayr 3-2, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Raiders big lead.
Adler Reed was the winning pitcher after working seven innings. Reed struck out ten and walked three. Reed gave up five runs on six hits.
Mount Ayr had 10 hits in the game led by four players with two hits. Rowan Sackett, Jaxsen Walter, Tate Dugan, and Avery Wolfe each had two hits. Other hits were from Hayes Stogdill and Drew Graham.
