MOUNT AYR, Iowa – The Mount Ayr volleyball team picked up a pair of match wins last week to wrap up the regular season with a win total of 24. The Raiderettes beat non-conference foe Murray and also beat POI foe Wayne in the week.
Mount Ayr will compete in the Pride of Iowa Conference volleyball tournament this week before beginning postseason play Monday, October 20. The Raiderettes host Essex in the first round of the Class 1A Region 4 tournament.
Murray hung with Mount Ayr in the first set before falling 25-21 to trail 1-0 in the match. Mount Ayr would go on to handily win the next two sets against the Mustangs for the sweep. The Mustangs lost the second set 25-15, falling behind 2-0. The Raiderettes claimed the match by winning the third set, 25-9. The win set Mount Ayr’s record at 24-9.
Mount Ayr had 32 kills led by Aubree Shields with 22, while Jaylee Shaffer had 31 assists. Dannie Stewart had 10 digs and was 17-for-19 at the service line with three aces. Mount Ayr snapped a two-match win streak by Murray.
Murray served 37-for-46 with six aces as a team. Leah Frederick led going 9-for-11 with two aces and Madison Henrichs going 7-for-10 with two aces. Frederick and Henrichs each had two kills in the match. Murray was led by Henrichs with eight digs and Maryssa McMurry with five.
Against Wayne, the Raiderettes swept the Falcons to win their 24th match. Mount Ayr set the tone early, winning the first set 25-9 for a 1-0 match lead. The Raiderettes survived a spirited second set that was close, 25-23, to take a 2-0 lead. Mount Ayr took the match with a 25-16 third set win.
Mount Ayr had 86 attacks in the match with 36 kills from those attacks. Aubree Shields led with 21 kills while Izzy Gilbertson had 10. Jaylee Shaffer led in assists with 30 and Shields had 10 digs. Mount Ayr served 63-for-73 with 12 aces in the match. Abby Larson led going a perfect 19-for-19 at the service line with an ace.
